FA Youth Cup journey continues

Burnley U18s continue their FA Youth Cup campaign with a fifth-round tie at home to Charlton Athletic on Friday night.

The young Clarets have beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City to get to this point and are looking forward to what should be an exciting occasion under the lights.

Tony Philliskirk’s team are well rested following the postponement of last week’s visit of Nottingham Forest in the U18 Premier League.

Our scholars’ last outing was an emphatic 6-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 7th February, which took them up to 11th in the 14-team table.

Braidin Derbyshire and James Lewis were both at the double that day, with further strikes coming from Fabio So and Corey King.

The wins over Wolves and Norwich have come by an aggregate score of 7-1, with the young Clarets putting five past the latter at Carrow Road in the fourth round.

Kian McMahon-Brown’s four-goal haul won the headlines in East Anglia, with substitute and fellow striker Derbyshire adding extra gloss in the 88th minute.

Charlton Athletic operate a category two academy, meaning they compete in the south section of the Professional Development League.

The Londoners have enjoyed an exemplary season to date, winning 11 and drawing five of their 18 outings. As such, they sit top of the table.

Their FA Youth Cup journey started with a 3-2 victory at Liverpool’s Academy site in Kirkby, in which they took a three-goal lead through captain Jack Belton, Ellis McMillan and Bradley Tagoe.

Liverpool staged a second-half comeback but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Addicks from progressing through to a fourth-round tie against Watford, which they won 3-1.

The roles were reversed on that occasion, with Charlton coming from behind thanks to second-half goals from McMillan, Raynon Richman and Sam Washington-Amoah.

Former professional Jason Pearce, who made more than 500 professional appearances as a centre-back, is the man in charge of the Charlton dugout.
