Young Clarets hit Sky Blues for six

Burnley U21s earned a third straight Professional Development League victory on Tuesday afternoon, beating Coventry City 6-2 at the Alan Higgs Centre.

Kamarni Ryan continued his fine run in front of goal with a brace, while Tommy McDermott, Joe Bauress, Hamzat Balogun and Alex Healy-Byrne were also on target in Warwickshire.

Manager Andy Farrell reverted to an eleven that was more like the Premier League Cup victory against Reading than last week’s win over Morecambe, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson returning in goal.

Second-year scholar Oli Pimlott joined the defence, while Bauress, Charlie Veevers and McDermott started in midfield.

Further forwards, Julien Vetro made a first Clarets appearance at any level to the right of striker Ryan.

The young Clarets made an electric start, scoring three times in the opening 16 minutes.

Ryan was first to strike, with Vetro feeding the number nine to pick out the bottom right corner from close range.

McDermott scored next and Ryan was heavily involved again as he forced a Coventry defender into a block that fell to McDermott, who had the simple task of tapping in.

Ryan’s second and the team’s third of the afternoon was similarly reactive, and the 19-year-old now has 16 goals for the season.

Coventry grew into the game as the half progressed but were limited to efforts from range and half chances, before Bauress made it 4-0 on the stroke of half-time.

After good work from Veevers found McDermott, Bauress took the ball off his team-mates’ toes to slot home from inside the area.

The hosts introduced Conrad Ambursley at the break and he had a immediate impact, reducing their arrears in the 47th minute.

Farrell’s side bounced back superbly though and restored their four-goal advantage less than a minute later when right-back Balogun met McDermott’s cross to volley in.

Two substitutions came on the hour mark, with Healy-Byrne replacing Balogun and Pimlott making way for Jesse Williams, who was making his first appearance in more than three months following a hip injury.

Reading scored again soon after through Kai Yearn and two more Clarets changes followed, with Brandon Ly replacing Bauress and Basilio Socoliche coming on for Vetro.

Farrell’s final roll of the dice saw Benji Wetshi replace Joao Mendes and the scoring was completed by Healy-Byrne seven minutes from time.

Having scored against the Sky Blues at Turf Moor earlier this season, the Irishman netted in a similar fashion here when he headed in Joe Ashton’s cross.

The result takes Burnley’s league points tally to 38 from 19 matches, and they’re next in action against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday 18th February. Kick-off at the County Ground in Leyland is 7pm.
