08/11/2014 – Burnley 1 – 0 Hull City

Ashley Barnes’ second-half header saw Burnley claim their first Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Hull City at Turf Moor.

The striker headed home what turned out to be the winning goal five minutes into the second-half, with the Tigers unable to respond in a tight contest in Lancashire.

Following a moment of reflection for Remembrance Sunday, the Clarets got straight into the action and carved open an early chance when Scott Arfield picked out Danny Ings with a lofted pass into the box, but the striker’s effort bounced just wide of the post, after looping over the head of the on-rushing Steve Harper.

Midway through the first-half, Burnley had another opportunity, but Ings saw his fierce half-volley denied by the hands of Harper, before Robbie Brady hacked away the parried effort off the goal line.

Hull were unable to create any chances in the opening 45 minutes, as both teams went into the break goalless, despite a strong display from the hosts.

Burnley continued where they had left off and deservedly broke the deadlock just a few minutes into the second-half. Kieran Trippier’s pin-point delivery found the head of Barnes inside the area, with the forward picking out the top corner emphatically with a powerful header to give Sean Dyche’s men the lead.

The Tigers looked to respond to going a goal down, as Abell Hernandez received the ball on the edge of the area, before turning his man and rifling just wide of the target.

There were limited chances for both teams heading into the final few minutes and Jake Livermore then wasted the final chance of the game, after smashing the ball way over the crossbar with a free-kick from distance.
