Tom Tweedy’s brace and a first 90 minutes for Aaron Ramsey on his return from injury were the highlights of the night as Burnley U21s beat Colchester United 3-0 on Friday.

The Welshman backed up his goal against Chelsea with a goal either side of half-time in Essex as the young Clarets earned a 15th Professional Development League victory of the season.

There were four changes to the side that started Monday’s Premier League Cup victory over Chelsea, with first-year scholar Connor Edwards starting in goal.

Two tweaks to the defence formed a new centre-back partnership of Alex Healy-Byrne and Logan Pye, while further forwards Ramsey took the number 10 shirt at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Striker Kamarni Ryan took a blow to the head in the opening minute and was forced off injured, with Basilio Socoliche taking his place.

It didn’t take long for the Clarets to open the scoring and it was Tweedy who netted his second goal in as many matches, converting from close range after Julien Vetro did well to intercept and cross.

The hosts rallied around the half hour mark as Max Jolliffe and Hakeem Sandah both worked Edwards, with the latter’s effort forcing a better save.

Tweedy almost doubled our lead on the stroke of half-time but pulled an effort narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

Burnley started the second half on top, with Tommy McDermott and Tweedy both having shots deflected wide before the latter scored his and the team’s second in the 57th minute.

Two changes shortly after the hour saw Vetro and McDermott make way for Joao Mendes and Charlie Veevers respectively, with Mendes featuring for the first time in just over a month.

Ramsey almost marked his milestone with a goal when he had the ball in the back of the net, but the linesman’s offside flag curtailed any celebrations.

Socoliche, who was playing in an unnatural striking role, almost capped a well-worked team move with 78 on the clock, but his powerful effort cannoned off the woodwork.

Manager Andy Farrell then turned to his bench for the final time, giving U17s players Michael Stanley and Brandon Pouani their first U21s minutes of the season in place of Pye and Tweedy.

When the game looked to be meandering towards its conclusion, Socoliche popped up with a third goal to put the cherry on top of a positive display.

After the ball hit the post, the 20-year-old was alert to the rebound and made no mistake with a quick finish.

Burnley now have 47 points from their 27 league matches, with 2nd-placed Hull City in action at Swansea City on Monday night.

Next up for Farrell and co is a trip to Crewe Alexandra on Friday 18th April, where kick-off is 1pm.
