Burnley made it three wins on the bounce in an eventful evening at The County Ground in Leyland.

The tone to an action packed evening was set from the off, with both sides testing the goalkeepers in the opening moments, before Burnley made the breakthrough in the 14th minute.

Kamarni Ryan burst into the box chasing a Tom Tweedy through ball, his shot was parried by Crewe keeper Tom Booth, only for Charlie Veevers to blast the rebound into the back of the net.

Burnley doubled their advantage just three minutes later.

Bradley Grant set up Ryan for the second goal. The number nine chasing onto a perfect pass to smash the ball low into the far corner, giving the keeper no chance down to his right.

Five minutes later, Tweedy, Veevers and Ryan teamed up again for the third. More precision passing on the edge of the area with Veevers supplying the final pass to Ryan for his second of the night, this time into the bottom left corner.

Before the fans had time to take a breath, Crewe pulled one back. Calum Aigus smashing the ball home through a congested six yard box in the 25th minute.

The goal gave Crewe the confidence to venture forward again. Their trialist smashing one against the crossbar from long range just after the half-hour mark.

Moments later though, the visitors were reduced to ten men. Joe Collins sent off for a professional foul on Charlie Veevers making their challenge even more difficult.

The half time whistle gave everyone a chance to take stock of a non-stop first 45 minutes which saw four goals, a red card and plenty to talk about.

The second half started in much the same manner. Tommy McDermott and Joe Bauress both denied by the Crewe keeper inside the first five minutes.

The Clarets then had two penalty shouts turned down just after the hour mark.

Despite end-to-end action for the remainder of the match, clear-cut chances were rare and the scoreline stayed the same.

In the closing moments of the match, Vernon Masara paid the price for a cheap yellow card in the 90th minute, his second of the evening, and the game ended with both teams down to ten men.

It was, however, a well earned win for Andy Farrell and his team, their third in a row.
