Ryan hat-trick helps young Clarets to victory

A young Burnley U21s side stepped up their pre-season schedule with a well-earned 5-2 victory over fellow PL2 outfit Stoke City on Friday afternoon.

Kamarni Ryan scored three times, alongside further strikes from Zach Johnson and Benji Wetshi on a productive day for Andy Farrell’s side.

Felix Chester kept goal, with the back line including second-year scholars Albert Blackie and Corey King.

Further forwards, Ryan led the line with Vernon Masara and Brandon Pouani occupying the wide berths either side of him.

An action-packed start saw the Potters take a 2nd-minute lead, but it was 1-1 three minutes later when Ryan finished between the Stoke ‘keeper’s legs.

An unfortunate Marley Leuluai own goal restored the visitors’ advantage but Burnley didn’t let their heads drop, with Masara heading agonisingly wide shortly before half-time.

Their persistence paid off 10 minutes after the restart when King expertly found Johnson, and the youngster picked out the top right corner from 25 yards.

Farrell made all five of his substitutions on the hour, with Wetshi, Charlie Veevers, Adam McCoy, Tom Tweedy and Jesse Williams all entering the fray.

Ryan’s second goal of the day came roughly 20 minutes from time and Wetshi later latched onto Blackie’s fizzed cross to make it 4-2.

Ryan completed his hat-trick with virtually the last kick, dispatching a penalty high into the top right corner to round off a comprehensive victory.
