Young Clarets return to winning ways in style

Substitute Kamarni Ryan scored twice as Burnley U21s recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Peterborough United on Tuesday afternoon.

His brace followed clinical first-half strikes from Tommy McDermott, Lewis Richardson and Joe Westley on a wet day at Burnley Training Centre.

There were six changes from the team that started the home game against Sheffield United last time out, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson keeping goal.

Hannes Delcroix was given another start as he continues to build fitness while Joe Bauress, McDermott and Charlie Veevers all returned from the off following their first team exploits in the Emirates FA Cup.

In the attacking line, Richardson played to the left of striker Westley.

The young Clarets started with intent and broke the deadlock after just four minutes with a well-worked move started by Bauress.

His lofted ball found Richardson and the winger squared for McDermott to pick out the bottom left corner.

Farrell’s side’s philosophy of playing out from ‘keeper Vilar Robinson was bearing fruit, with Bauress and Veevers showing to receive the ball and launch attacks.

Two goals in six minutes then gave Burnley firm control and it was Richardson who struck first with a fine low finish after strong hold-up play from Westley.

Westley then found the net himself with a similar finish, sweeping the ball into the bottom left corner from Tweedy’s perfectly-placed pass.

Peterborough’s only effort of note came a minute before the break, but David Kamara’s edge-of-the-area effort curled narrowly wide.

The half-time break saw Ryan enter the action in place of Westley, with Posh making three changes at the same time in search of a route back into the game.

Ryan’s introduction had the desired effect soon after as the striker competed well in the air to force home his team’s fourth goal with 55 on the clock.

Then came a further three changes from Farrell on the hour as Hamzat Balogun replaced Alex Healy-Byrne, Joao Mendes replaced Richardson and McDermott made way for Brandon Ly.

Mendes looked lively from the off, cutting in from the right to force a save from Posh ‘keeper Bastian Smith.

The game looked to be heading towards a quiet conclusion but there was still time for action at both ends before the clock hit 90.

Excellent strength and defending saw Clarets defender Logan Pye thwart David Kamara and Burnley went straight up the other end to add a fifth goal through Ryan’s chipped finish.

Farrell’s side now have 32 points from 17 Professional Development League matches and sit 3rd in the table ahead of a trip to Barnsley next week.
