Burnley U21s started the defence of their Central League Cup title with a 5-0 victory over Carlisle United Reserves on Tuesday afternoon.
Substitute Tom Tweedy’s brace was accompanied by goals from Joe Westley, Tommy McDermott and Joe Bauress at Burnley Training Centre.
The Young Clarets finished with nine men as McDermott and Brandon Ly were both dismissed for second bookable offences, but that didn’t stop them recording a seventh straight win and fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Andy Farrell made five changes to the team that started last week’s league victory over Coventry City at Turf Moor, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson playing for the first time since early October.
Hamzat Balogun and Logan Pye stepped in at right and left back respectively, with the latter starting a competitive match for the first time since March.
Further forwards, Ly took the central midfield position alongside Bauress and Vernon Masara started off the left.
Benn Ward almost gave the team the perfect start but headed narrowly wide of a post in the first minute.
The young Clarets enjoyed much of the ball in the early stages and Westley was next to pull the trigger, but again his effort was off target.
He wasn’t to be denied in the 28th minute, though. After good work on the right, Joe Bevan produced a pinpoint cross for the striker to head his sixth goal of the season.
The visitors grew into the game after that setback and Jonah Lowes came closest to equalising before half-time, but the number 10’s effort was narrowly wide of the right-hand post.
Farrell was forced into a change five minutes before the interval, with Joe Ashton replacing Pye at left-back.
Ly received his first caution early in the second half before Murray Campbell was a whisker away from doubling our lead, but his header curled over the bar.
The second goal did come on the hour, though, when McDermott beautifully found the bottom right corner from 22 yards.
Burnley’s second and third change of the afternoon saw Jesse Williams come on for Ward and Tweedy replace Bevan, with the latter scoring twice in two minutes to take the game away from the visitors.
The first was a cool finish having been slid through by Ly, and the Welshman was on hand to chip in from the edge of the area for the Clarets’ fourth of the afternoon.
Ly was dismissed with 19 minutes to play but that didn’t affect the young Clarets’ rhythm, with Bauress rounding off the scoring with a slick finish from range with 77 on the clock.
There was still time for McDermott to be given his marching orders too, with the number 10 adjudged to have mistimed his tackle to earn a second yellow card.
Farrell’s side will continue their Group A campaign with games against AFC Barrow and Blackburn Rovers next week.
Before that they travel to Reading’s Select Car Leasing Stadium on Friday 8th November, where kick-off is 7pm.
