Goals from Lewis Richardson, Joe Westley and Kamarni Ryan earned Burnley U21s a 3-1 victory over a Blackpool Reserve side on Tuesday afternoon.

First-team players Hannes Delcroix and Owen Dodgson earned a valuable 90 minutes each at Burnley Training Centre, playing together at centre-back.

There were six changes to the XI that lined up against Brighton & Hove Albion on the south coast on Saturday, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson in goal

A new-look back four saw Logan Pye start at left-back alongside Delcroix and Dodgson, with Charlie Veevers playing in the 10 alongside left winger Lewis Richardson, who was making his second start of the season.

The 21-year-old got his side off to the perfect start, cutting in from the left to score his first goal of the campaign with a well-placed finish into the bottom left corner.

It was 2-0 just seven minutes later when, after great work from Pye down the left to chase down the ball, Westley produced a first-time finish into the same corner.

The Clarets looked threatening every time they ventured forwards with Brandon Ly and Veevers working Mckenzie Chapman from the edge of the area and a free-kick respectively.

Richardson thought he had increased the lead to three just before the interval after a defence-splitting pass from Ly, but he was flagged offside.

The visitors started the second half more brightly and a mistake at the back allowed Taylor Bowen to halve the deficit from close range.

Andy Farrell then made his first two changes on the hour, with goal scorer Westley making way for Ryan and Tom Tweedy replacing captain Joe Bauress.

With the game in the balance Burnley pushed in search of a third goal that would kill the game off, with Ryan having a header blocked behind and Delcroix planting another one wide.

Defender joins the Swans on loan

A triple change with 72 on the clock saw Hamzat Balogun, Pye and Richardson make way for Benn Ward, Joe Ashton and Basilio Socoliche.

Ryan was then able to put the game beyond any doubt five minutes later when his shot from the right half of the penalty area crossed the line before a touch from team-mate Tweedy.

The striker looked lively ever since his introduction and came close to notching his second twice before the end of the 90, but it finished 3-1.

Farrell’s side are through to the second round of the 2024/25 Lancashire FA Senior Cup, with fixture details to be confirmed in due course.
