Burnley U21s beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to make it two Premier League Cup Group G victories from two.
Tom Tweedy struck in the first half and an own goal after the break improved the scoreline in front of a healthy crowd of 782 at Turf Moor.
Andy Farrell made five changes to the side that started at Peterborough United in the Professional Development League on Wednesday, with Sam Waller starting in goal.
Alex Healy-Byrne and captain Benn Ward returned to the back line, with Tommy McDermott taking the attacking midfield role and Kamarni Ryan playing off the left.
The visitors had the better of the attacking play in the early stages, but unfortunately for them Josh Duffins and Cam Peupion both blazed over from promising positions.
Those let offs allowed the Clarets to grow into the game amidst a heavy downpour of rain, with Ward almost squeezing a header in at the back post.
Burnley then came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock twice in two minutes as Will Hugill’s shot was deflected over and Jesse Williams had an effort blocked on the line.
It was Tom Tweedy who did find the opening goal, coming onto a Brad Grant cross to net his second goal in as many games with 22 on the clock.
Brighton immediately upped the ante, and Waller did well to prevent an equaliser by sticking out his right leg to stop a low goal-bound effort.
The rest of the first half passed without incident, allowing Farrell’s side to take a well-deserved lead into the interval.
Ryan thought he had doubled our lead shortly after the break, but the forward was adjudged to have been offside when he was picked out by a Tweedy through ball.
McDermott was next to test Brighton ‘keeper Steven Hall but his powerful effort was palmed wide and Farrell turned to his bench soon after, introducing Joe Bevan for Ryan.
Bevan had a role to play in the goal that made it 2-0, picking up the ball and feeding Grant to fizz it across the box where defender Freddie Simmonds could only convert into his own net.
Farrell’s side continued to push forward despite their healthy lead, with McDermott’s powerful effort testing the ‘keeper and Williams heading against the bar from a corner.
Brandon Ly, Vernon Masara and Joao Mendes were all afforded minutes off the bench as the game headed towards its conclusion.
The Clarets’ back line remained resolute and a second clean sheet of the season contributed to a happy afternoon at the Turf.
Burnley sit top of Group G after two matches, having beaten Luton Town comprehensively last time out.
Next up is a return to league action on Tuesday 15th October, with Barnsley the visitors to the County Ground in Leyland. Kick-off is 7pm.
