Burnley U21s gave themselves an impossible mountain to climb as they were beaten 3-0 by Sunderland U21s on Friday night.

All three of the Black Cats’ goals came in a frustrating first half in Leyland and despite an improved performance after the break, the young Clarets were unable to salvage a result.

It was a much-changed side to the one that was victorious at Cardiff City earlier this week, with Albert Blackie, Kamarni Ryan and Kian McMahon-Brown the only three players to keep their place.

Hannes Delcroix earned valuable minutes at the heart of the defence, while Joe Bevan made his first start of the season.

Oli Pimlott, Murray Campbell, George Brierley, Ellis Clark and Brandon Pouani all started following their first team exploits in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute when Marshall Burke’s cross from the right was dummied, giving Harrison Jones the chance to finish first time into the top left corner.

Delcroix headed a presentable chance from Clark’s free-kick over soon afterwards, and the Black Cats made them pay with 23 on the clock.

A rapid counter attack presented Timur Tuteirov the ball just inside his own half, and he beat Blackie for pace before picking out the bottom right corner.

Sunderland continued to have most of the ball and their dominance bore fruit two minutes before half-time.

It was Tutierov who was on target again, and this time the Ukrainian produced a fantastic curling effort from the edge of the area.

Clarets manager Andy Farrell made a triple change at the break, with Delcroix, Bevan and Pouani making way for Jesse Williams, Zach Johnson and Joe Ashton respectively.

His team emerged from the changing rooms with added impetus and Ryan forced Sunderland ‘keeper Isaac Allan into a smart save in the 56th minute.

Johnson did the same from the resulting corner when his 22-yard strike looked destined for the bottom left corner, but Allan’s right hand denied Burnley a route back into the game.

A further switch saw Charlie Veevers replace Blackie and Burnley were now enjoying more territory but were unable to work a chance of note until seven minutes from time.

After good work from Johnson to win the ball high, the winger squared for Ryan but his shot hit the post via a deflection.

Goalkeeper Oisin Cooney produced two fine stops late on to prevent more damage, but Burnley fell to a fourth Premier League 2 defeat of the season.

Next up is the visit of Barrow to Burnley Training Centre in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup on Tuesday 30th September.
