Young Clarets beaten at Turf Moor

A brace from Michael Lane earned Fleetwood Town U21s all three Professional Development League points on Tuesday night.

The winger scored either side of half-time to condemn Burnley to defeat on their third time playing at Turf Moor this season.

There were three changes to the team that lined up against the Cods just four days ago in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup, with Logan Pye returning to the defence in a move that saw Joe Ashton shuffle over to left-back.

With Tom Tweedy being called up to the Welsh U21s squad, Charlie Veevers started in midfield alongside Julien Vetro, who played on the left of the three behind striker Kamarni Ryan.

Tommy McDermott forced the first save of the evening after just four minutes, working Fleetwood ‘keeper Luke Hewitson low to his right.

At the other end, a Callum Dolan effort found Lewis Forshaw’s arms with the help of two deflections in a move that started a purple patch for the visitors.

When a lovely long pass found Finn Cross-Adair, he rounded Forshaw but Joe Ashton was on hand to block behind.

Fleetwood took the lead in the 24th minute and it was a fine team move. A raking diagonal found Leo Thompson, and he fizzed a first-time ball across the face for Lane to finish at the back post.

The young Clarets dominated the ball for the rest of the first half and created chances, with Ryan and Zach Johnson both working Hewitson.

Joe Bauress shot over from 20 yards and Ryan did similar when he found himself through on goal, with Andy Farrell’s side going into the break behind.

Vetro made way for Basilio Socoliche at halftime and Fleetwood made three changes of their own, with the visitors doubling their lead less than a minute after the restart

Crispin McLean fed the ball out to Lane on the left wing, and his powerful effort found the top left corner off the post.

Further switches on the hour from Farrell saw Benji Wetshi replace Ryan and Friday’s goal scorer Alex Healy-Byrne come on for Johnson, with Hamzat Balogun moving forwards to right midfield.

Brandon Ly later placed Balogun and the Clarets rallied in the last 15 minutes or so, with Healy-Byrne coming agonisingly close to meeting a Socoliche cross on the run.

Ly had an effort cleared off the line and Healy-Byrne later blazed a presentable chance over as the young Clarets huffed and puffed but were unable to find a consolation goal.

Farrell’s side now have 41 points from their 22 league matches and are next in action on Tuesday 25th March, when they travel to Yorkshire to face Hull City.
