Midfield goals propel young Clarets to victory

Joe Bauress netted twice as Burnley U21s made it back-to-back victories with a 4-0 win at Barnsley on Tuesday afternoon.

The midfielder netted either side of half-time before Charlie Veevers and Logan Pye also got in on the act in South Yorkshire.

A new-look back line saw Hamzat Balogun come in at right-back alongside centre-backs Murray Campbell and Joe Ashton, with Pye on their left.

Manager Andy Farrell changed the entire front line from last week’s victory over Peterborough United too, with Joe Bevan featuring for the first time in 12 weeks because of injury.

Alongside him, Kamarni Ryan started following his brace against the Posh and Joao Mendes filled in on the left.

Bevan looked eager to impress from the off as his pace and power worked an opening for Veevers in the sixth minute, but his shot was tipped over by Barnsley ‘keeper Kieren Flavell.

At the other end the Tykes came close to breaking the deadlock through Luke Alker, but he pulled wide when one-on-one with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson.

From there the young Clarets started to build a head of steam and after Bevan had another effort turned round the post, Bauress opened the scoring on the half hour.

Good work from Balogun teed up the 19-year-old to sweep the ball into the bottom left corner from just inside the area.

Farrell’s side were unlucky not to go into half-time with a bigger lead and it was Bevan who came closest to adding a second, but the Scot smacked a post at the end of a quick counter attack.

That was his last involvement as he made way for Basilio Socoliche in a planned change at the interval, and the second half started with a high tempo.

After a good touch, turn and shot by Ryan, Bauress was first to react inside the penalty area to score his and the team’s second goal of the afternoon in the 55th minute.

Two more changes on the hour saw Bauress make way for Brandon Ly and 16-year-old Kian McMahon-Brown make his first U21s appearance in place of Mendes.

Shortly after Vilar Robinson produced a fine double save with his legs to keep the lead at two and that proved to be invaluable when Veevers put the result beyond doubt with 69 on the clock.

The summer addition looked eager to shoot whenever the chance arose, and that determination earned him a slice of luck as a 20-yard effort found the net with the help of a deflection.

Alex Healy-Byrne then added fresh legs to the defence in place of Balogun but the young Clarets weren’t done there, with Ly grazing the top of the bar before Pye struck two minutes from time.

The left-back found himself in a shooting position on the edge of the box and his drilled effort took a nick on the way past Flavell to round off a positive display.

Another three points take our tally to 35 from 18 matches, and the young Clarets have now climbed above Hull City into 2nd in the Professional Development League North table.
