Despite a gutsy display, Burnley U21s were beaten 3-2 by AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday afternoon with the winning goal coming in second-half stoppage-time.
The Young Clarets twice took the lead in Dorset, with Charlie Veevers netting his first goal for the Club and Brandon Ly producing a powerful strike that found the back of the net via the crossbar.
With several U18s taking to the field in the second half and injuries forcing people to play out of position for the closing stages, Bournemouth struck late to end our unbeaten start to the season.
There were changes to the side that started our last outing against Ipswich Town, with Brad Grant slotting in at left-back and Joe Bauress appearing in a competitive Burnley fixture for the first time since May 2023.
Elsewhere, Ly started in behind striker Kamarni Ryan and second-year scholar Oli Pimlott was given an opportunity on the left flank.
The Young Clarets started brightly, with Pimlott heading narrowly wide and Joe Bevan forcing a strong save low to Bournemouth ‘keeper Callan McKenna’s left.
Burnley’s pace on the wings was a threat throughout the first half, with several quick counterattacks not quite finding the desired end product.
The half finished with Burnley on top and they carried that momentum into the second period, with Veevers curling beautifully into the top right corner on 47 minutes.
Frustratingly the lead lasted just two minutes as Jonny Stuttle powered in from close range.
That didn’t dent Burnley spirits, though, and Ly restored the lead with another beautifully placed finish.
With the game taking place at their Vitality Stadium Bournemouth were unwilling to give up and levelled again through Ben Winterburn 12 minutes from time.
The last 10 minutes plus added time were frantic and both teams pushed forward at every opportunity.
Unfortunately it was the Cherries who found a decisive third goal as Jonny Day finished well inside the area in the 92nd minute.
After three games the Clarets’ points total of two leaves them 8th in the 11-team Professional Development League North table.
Next up is a home game against Charlton Athletic on Sunday 1st September. Kick-off at Turf Moor is 1pm.
