Burnley FC’s U21s side finalised their preparations for the upcoming 2023/24 Professional Development League campaign with a 5-2 victory in a behind-closed-doors game against Salford City’s B team.

Basilio Rieno Socoliche struck another pre-season goal, taking his tally across both first team and academy to three, before a trialist added a second.

Salford pulled a goal back before the break before Lewis Richardson opened the second 45 by making the game 3-1 to the Clarets.

The Ammies again continued to fight back and reduced the deficit to one once more, but Will Hugill latched onto a poor clearance to score from distance to reestablish Burnley’s two-goal advantage.

Richardson netted once more at the end of the game to secure another pre-season victory for the Clarets.

Speaking post-match, coach Andy Farrell said: ““I thought the boys could have moved the ball quicker in the first half to make the game easier for themselves.

“They went a goal or two up and took their foot off the gas – taking liberties and too many touches at times which I spoke to them about at half-time.

“In the second half, they moved the ball quicker and didn’t take as many touches.

““I think the boys are ready for the season, as Charlie [Adam] said, we have a good group of players and the only thing holding them back will be themselves.

“If they go about it the right way then I think they should have a good season and there will be a lot of positives if they put everything into it.

“On the football side of things, they are more than capable, and then the work ethic side at times is really, really good and we need to make sure we’re on that.”

Defender Owen Dodgson has enjoyed first team experience in pre-season and featured for the U21s in the fixture against the Ammies.

He added: ““I thought it was a good win for the boys, as there were a lot of new faces, but we dug in and did what we do – getting a win.”

“I’m excited to go into the new season, for me, it’s perfect to play 90 minutes and get those minutes into my legs.”
