Burnley’s U21 side put an end to a run of defeats with a dominant performance against Peterborough United, but were only able to take a point from a 1-1 draw.
Captain Dan Sassi, one of two players to remain in the side from last week’s loss at Sheffield United, netted the opener for the Clarets in the first half but the visitors struck back within 60 seconds of the restart.
Joe Bauress was the other player to keep his place in the starting 11 with Alex Healy-Byrne amongst the nine changes. The full-back made his return to the side after a lengthy absence, with Welshman Tom Tweedy also named from the off for the first time at U21 level.
First Half
After a quiet start at the Burnley Training Centre, Jez Davies dragged a shot straight at Posh goalkeeper Matthew Laycock while frontman Joe Westley flicked a header onto the crossbar from Marcel Lewis’ corner.

Lewis was then denied by Laycock, and Bauress struck over, before the opening goal came on 35 minutes via the head of skipper Sassi. Lewis whipped a free-kick in, and the centre back got in front of his man to glance home with a low header.
Will Hugill was the next to go close, kept out by the feet of Laycock, and at the other end defender Healy-Byrne did well to hook Kai Corbett’s low cross off the line.
Joe Westley’s attempted lob from inside the area having taken down an upfield ball well also went just over the bar in the last action of the opening 45 minutes.
Second Half
Visitors Posh levelled within a minute of play getting back underway as Lewis Darlington ran onto a through ball and slotted past Charlie Casper one-on-one.

From there on in, Burnley dominated proceedings oncemore with Davies going close and Lewis rattling the crossbar with a free-kick from distance following the first in a series of heavy challenges by Peterborough.
Coming off the bench, Seb Thompson almost had an instant impact when he beat his man and took aim with a low bouncing drive which Laycock had to push away. Westley was first to the rebound but saw his follow-up blocked behind.
At the other end, Casper had to tip a quick-thinking free-kick from Corbett around the post 10 minutes from time, the only save the Burnley man was forced into throughout the 90 minutes.

Pushing for a late winner, the Clarets were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty when substitute Deji Sotona was felled by the flailing legs of a Posh defender, and Sassi also sliced an effort wide on the volley from a Bauress cross.
Settling for a point come the full-time whistle, the U21s are next in action on Monday 3rd April at Millwall (3pm KO).
