Coach Andy Farrell focused on the positives in Monday afternoon’s home draw against Peterborough United and praised his sides work off the ball as much as on it.
The Clarets shared the points with a 1-1 result against Posh, who currently sit 7th in the Northern Section of the Professional Development League.
Burnley showed their dominance in many areas of the game, and Farrell was keen to praise his sides performance at the Burnley Training Centre.
“The boys did really well in the first half, and you could see on the eye that they were working hard.
“They played out through their goalkeeper and Joe [Westley] pushed on a little bit higher and started pressing to cause more problems and as the boys behind him began to back him up we dominated that part of the game through that.
“Their defensive work was really good and in turn I think that winning the ball further up the pitch created a number of chances and due to that we managed to go in at the break in front.
“So that’s a positive and we’re looking to build on that, and I think that is a must.”
Farrell was also pleased to see Marcel Lewis grab the assist for Dan Sassi’s headed goal, as he alluded to the fact that he had spoken to Marcel before the game about his deliveries into the box.
That was captain Sassi's first goal of the campaign as Lewis notched another assist to add to his tally.
“I said to Marcel before the game, when you come inside, try and put the ball towards the side-netting and see how many crosses you can get in.
“There’s plenty of times that we get into those positions and what we do is, pass, pass, and pass, the ball turns over and we end up chasing back down the other end of the pitch.
“So I said to him that when he gets an opportunity to just stick the ball in, if the players aren’t in the position to put the ball in the back of the net initially, over a period of time they’ll realise the ball is coming into the same area and they’ll start to get into those areas.
“And after the goal there was another two or three where Marcel came inside and we weren’t far off sticking the ball in the back of the net again, so I’m pleased that paid off.”
The U21s now return to action in the PDL next Monday Afternoon – 3rd April – as they travel to face Millwall at Millwall Training Ground (3pm KO).
