U21 PREVIEW: READING V BURNLEY

Berkshire trip for Clarets in first away game of season

2022-08-14T18:00:00.000Z

Burnley’s U21 side face their first away trip of the campaign in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon (August 15), taking on Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

With wholesale change to the squad over the summer as players moved up into the first-team setup, the Clarets named three youth team players in the matchday squad on the opening day against Charlton Athletic last time out.

16-year-old Joe Bauress started in midfield, while Joe Westley was introduced off the bench. And ahead of the trip to Berkshire, the side are still looking for their first points of the campaign having been defeated 3-1 by the Addicks.

Falling behind early on, striker Lewis Richardson – who captains the U21s - levelled things up with a smart finish, but Charlton regained their lead late on in the first half before grabbing a third midway through the second 45.

Now recovered from a hamstring injury, full back Finn Armstrong is back in contention for the game against the Royals, and will add experience to the group having featured regularly at U23 level over the last couple of seasons alongside striker Joe McGlynn.

Striker McGlynn adds to tally for table toppers Hyde

The Clarets will be no strangers to Reading having met in Premier League 2, Division 2 last season, where Burnley missed out on a play-off spot by goal difference alone and the Royals finished bottom of the division.

Winning 3-1 when Reading visited the county Ground in September 2021, it was the Berkshire natives who claimed a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in March.

Tomorrow’s hosts, who are headed up by former striker Noel Hunt, were also defeated in their opening game of the 2022/23 season, losing 2-0 at Sheffield United. Oli McBurnie and Will Osula were the Blades’ goalscorers on the day.

Scheduled to get underway at 14:00, coverage of tomorrow’s game will come via Twitter - @ClaretsAcademy – while a report will be published on burnleyfc.com post-match.

If any fans do wish to make the journey to the Select Car Leasing Stadium, entry is free to all along with car parking, with refreshments available to purchase inside the ground.
