Following a tough couple of weeks on the road, the U21s return to home soil on Monday afternoon – 27th March – when Peterborough United are the visitors to the Burnley Training Centre (3pm KO).
The Clarets head into the meeting with the Posh on the back of successive defeats over the Pennines in Yorkshire, to Barnsley & Sheffield United respectively.
Last week’s trip to Bramall Lane saw the hosts, who are just three points away from a second successive Northern Section title in the Professional Development League, run out 4-0 winners.
Accordingly, Burnley remain 4th in the standings and are three points off both Hull City in 3rd & Wigan Athletic in 2nd, both of whom have played a game more.
Only the top two come the end of the season will progress into the national play-offs, competing against the top two in the Southern Section.
With a County Cup semi-final also to come, there are six league matches remaining this term for the U21s to mount a late push into those top two places, starting with Monday’s meeting with Peterborough.
The Posh themselves are 8th at the time of writing, seven points below Burnley having played two games fewer.
Boss Matthew Etherington & assistant Simon Davies departed United to take up senior roles at Crawley Town back in November, which they have now also vacated.
A few days before their departure from Peterborough however, the pair oversaw United’s 4-1 victory over a young Burnley side at their idVerde Training Ground.
Michael Mellon was the Clarets goalscorer on a sodden day in Cambridgeshire, one of Peterborough’s six victories to date in the league this term.
Now under the care of Danny Walker, who was previously Manchester City U23s assistant manager, Peterborough have also lost their last two including a 2-0 defeat at Coventry City last time out where both goals came in the first half.
