Burnley’s U21 side return to action in the first of four consecutive Premier League Cup group stage games on Monday afternoon, 21st November, taking on Swansea City down in South Wales (2pm KO).
With six group games to be played in total, Monday’s game will see the Clarets reach the halfway mark after a defeat at home to Arsenal and a draw away at Stoke City last month.
Against the Potters, who along with Arsenal compete in Premier League 2, Dara Costelloe’s goal early on in the second half looked to have secured all three points before a 94th minute leveller from the hosts.
With young sides on show, Burnley also lost out to both Hull City & Peterborough United in the games which followed back in the Professional Development League.
The Clarets did though return to winning ways in their most recent outing, triumphing 3-0 against Barnsley at Turf Moor in front of over 200 supporters.
In what was the final league game of the calendar year, Mike Mellon and Owen Dodgson both got on the scoresheet prior to the break while a Trialist rounded proceedings off late on.
That victory took the Clarets back up to 2nd in the Northern Section of the PDL, occupying a Play-Off spot, ahead of their trip to take on Swansea in the Premier League Cup.
The Welsh outfit also ply their trade in the PDL, though being in the Southern Section of the division means that Burnley will only take them on once in league action over the course of that campaign, and the pair’s meeting isn’t until May 2023.
Managed by Jon Grey, City’s U21s are 4th in the Southern Section, though have taken three points more than Burnley from the same number of games (14).
Most recently, the Swans five-match winning run was brought to an abrupt end with a 3-2 defeat on home soil against Coventry City. Grey’s side were leading 2-0 at the break, and 2-1 up until the 81st minute, but conceded twice late on at their Landore Training Ground base, the same venue Monday’s game will be at.
In terms of the Premier League Cup, Burnley’s visit to South Wales will only be Swansea’s second group game having lost 2-1 at Arsenal back in mid-August.
On a day which saw all three goals come in the first half, Swans forward Josh Thomas handed them an early lead before being shown a straight red card 38 minutes in.
Monday’s meeting won’t be the first time that the two Clubs have met in the competition having faced off in 2017/18, also at the group stage, when each took three points away from home.
Then in an U23 format, Burnley won a ‘Battle of Britain’ in January 2018 at Swansea, running out 2-0 victors with goals from Dwight McNeil & Ntumba Massanka. But a month later in Lancashire, it was the Welshmen who claimed a 1-0 victory when Kenji Gorre – son of ex-Clarets midfielder Dean – was on target.
This time around, the trip to Wales will be covered in full over on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy while a report will also be published on burnleyfc.com post-match. Clarets host Potters under Leyland lights in penultimate home group game
