A month-by-month look back at 2023/24…

JANUARY

Tony Philliskirk’s team started 2024 in the best possible way, with Vernon Masara striking twice in two minutes after coming on as a substitute before Benji Wetshi sealed a win over Wigan Athletic.

After a defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the semi-finals of the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup it was back to league action, with Birmingham City winning 3-2 at Burnley Training Centre.

Then came a momentous victory over QPR in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup at MATRADE Loftus Road, in which Rohan Vaughan and Murray Campbell found the back of the net.

Vaughan was on target again in the final outing of the month, a 4-0 victory over Coventry City in which Masara also netted a hat-trick.

FEBRUARY

February was a similarly busy time, starting with our first-year scholars beating AFC Bournemouth 5-3 in the U17 Professional Development League Cup.

Unfortunately, the FA Youth Cup journey then came to end courtesy of a 3-0 defeat at Bristol City before a return to league action produced a 3-2 victory over Crewe Alexandra with Oli Pimlott, Ben Jordison and Callum West all on target.

The U18 PDL Cup campaign ended against Oxford United before Burnley faced both Sheffield sides back-to-back, with the United tie finishing goalless and West scoring in a 1-1 draw with Wednesday.

To end the month, the U17s were beaten 3-0 by Watford in the PDL Cup.

MARCH

Adam Abass’ late goal wasn’t enough to prevent defeat to Barnsley in March’s opener, but the young Clarets hit back in style with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Hull City.

West, Vaughan and a trialist all netted in the first half before further strikes from Zach Johnson and Logan Carlin put the cherry on top after the break.

Philliskirk’s team then contested a hard-fought draw with Watford before Hull got their revenge, winning 4-0 against a Burnley team featuring several U16s players.

APRIL

The U18s enjoyed an unbeaten April, winning three of their five outings. U16s player Brandon Pouani’s brace and goals from Johnson and Lucas Wane secured a 4-0 victory over Ipswich Town to start.

Then came a one all draw with Fleetwood Town before another four-goal display in South Wales against Swansea City.

Burnley returned to Lancashire and put three past Cardiff City, with forward Ryan Tioffo marking almost a year out with myositis ossificans by winning and scoring a penalty.

The month ended with a 1-1 draw at home to Barnsley.

MAY

The unbeaten run continued into May, with Tioffo scoring a brace that included a stoppage-time penalty to earn all three points away at Peterborough United.

AFC Bournemouth were the opponents on the final day and a goal from U16s player Kian McMahon-Brown was sandwiched between two Cherries strikes in a 2-1 defeat.
