Three was the magic number for the youth team as they earned a third consecutive win in all competitions with a 3-0 victory away at Nottingham Forest.
Goals from Jacson Coppack, Dan Sassi and Trevon Bryan sealed all three points at the Nigel Doughty Academy and - coincidentally – pushed the Clarets up to third in the U18 Northern Premier League.
After a cagey opening half-an-hour, both sides had their first chances of the game in quick succession.
Forest forward Detlef Esapa Osong cut in from the left wing and fired wide, before Will Couch went close with a header for Burnley. Jack Leckie’s looping cross following a corner was met by Couch, but his effort was well held by Reds’ goalkeeper Aaron Bott.
But in a half of few chances, Burnley did edge in front prior to the break in sublime style. A long throw into the box wasn’t dealt with by the hosts, and Coppack made no mistake on the half volley firing into the bottom corner of the net.
That opener fired the Clarets up and soon after the restart, they doubled their advantage through defender Dan Sassi who towered highest in the area to head home from Coppack’s floated free-kick.
Joe Westley and Wiktor Gromek were both brought off the bench by boss Tony Philliskirk in a bid to put the game beyond any doubt along with Trevon Bryan, but before they got the opportunity to do so, ‘keeper Harry Moss provided a big save at a crucial time.
With 15 minutes remaining, Esapa Osong broke the Clarets’ defensive line and raced through on goal, but in a one-on-one scenario, Moss got down well to his left and kept the ball out of the back of his net with a smart stop.
Not only did that ensure a first clean sheet of the campaign for the U18’s, but it also provided them with a springboard to go and get a third goal, which came from Bryan five minutes from full-time.
The frontman linked up well with fellow substitute Westley, latching onto his headed flick on, and tapped home the rebound after Bott had saved his initial effort. With that, a third consecutive victory in all competitions was sealed.

Couch’s second half strike seals three points in North East for young Clarets
Post-match in the Midlands, U18’s boss Philliskirk had an overriding emotion of pride in his side’s performance.
He said: “In adversity, the lads have shown spirit a lot this season and that was evident again today.
“This morning, we got told that one of the lads needed a PCR test, so we’ve had to change it all again last minute. We’ve still got 10 players unavailable for different reasons and in the second half, we’ve changed the system a little bit again so after today, we’re really proud of the lads.
“If I was mentioning these things when we were getting beat then it would be like an excuse, so I want to mention it when we’ve won to highlight just how proud I am of them. The whole team showed effort, determination, spirit, had good attitude and great application levels.
“It’s amazing what that will get you at any level of football and we showed that in abundance today by coming away with a positive result.
“We’re in the development system, so it’s all about teaching lads ‘the Burnley way’ for us. We ask them to look in the mirror and ask ‘have I done my best?’ just like we do as a management team. None of them could have given any more out there today. I just thought the lads were great.”
