Burnley U18s played out a goalless draw with Sheffield United in the Professional Development League on Saturday afternoon.
The game kicked off with intensity and the first opportunity fell to Burnley's Lucas Wane. After Callum West delivered a long ball into the box, Wane's close-range strike was met by a solid block from Blades goalkeeper Ryan Andrews.
United responded swiftly, launching a counter-attack as Jayden Prunty delivered a precise cross to Jackson Blaize, whose header narrowly missed the target.
Moments later Sam Aston hammered than effort goal bound, but defender Marley Leuluai produced an outstanding block.
West then played another brilliant looped ball into the area that fell at the feet of Adam Abbas, but he was unable to get controlled contact which resulted in the ball missing the target.
Despite an energetic opening twenty minutes possession remained evenly split, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock. United's Riley McLachlan attempted a long-range shot, but narrowly missed the mark.
In the closing minutes of the first half Aston posed another threat with a curling free kick from just outside the box. However, Clarets 'keeper Lewis Forshaw delivered a remarkable full-stretch save to push the ball away from danger.
The second half unfolded with equal amounts of possession, resulting in few chances. Blades' Mekhi Haughton-Parris managed a shot on target from close range, but Forshaw produced a crucial save.
McLachlan then emerged as a threat once more when he attempted a curled effort, but Burnley captain Jack Rogers was on hand to volley the ball away,
Tony Philliskirk's team continued to defend resolutely and pushed forward whenever possible. It almost paid off late on when striker Benji Wetshi found himself in a shooting position, only to be denied by Blades goalkeeper Andrews once again.
The result means that Burnley U18s climb above Sheffield Wednesday and into 4th in the PDL North table on goal difference.
It's therefore set up nicely for the team's next fixture, which is against the Owls at on Saturday 24th February at the Burnley Training Centre. Kick-off is 12pm.
