Josh Brownhill described the Clarets as 'not at it' in Saturday afternoon's 5-0 loss to league title contenders Arsenal.
Speaking after the game, the Burnley captain felt a lack of quality over the 90 minutes was disappointing to see, especially after more positive performances against Manchester City and Liverpool previously.
“It’s disappointing, we weren’t at it today, the quality wasn’t there. Too easy the goals. It’s just one of those games where we got what we deserved I think.”
Arsenal arrived in strong form having scored sixteen goals in their last four league games, six of which came against West Ham last weekend, making them a tough opponent.
“There’s never an easy time to play these teams, especially the ones that we’ve played recently, you know, they are a top, top team. But for us, we’ve shown we can compete, do well and create chances. Today I didn’t really see any of that.
“Yeah, we worked hard, that’s a given anyway. But overall, it’s just the quality with the ball, without the ball. It’s a tough one to take for sure.”
In previous games against fellow league title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool, the Clarets felt there were positives to take from the performances, despite not securing the three points. What did Brownhill feel changed this afternoon to result in the bigger score line?
“We probably just gave them easy chances and the quality that they’ve got, the quality of the Premier League, they just take it, that’s the difference. We had a few big chances over the last few games that we didn’t take, and you know the best teams do that, and we haven’t done that. I feel like that was it, they created some really good chances. It probably looked really easy for them and people watching it, it’s not acceptable from us.
“I don’t think this game’s going to define our season. It’s one that we’ll hold our hands up and take and it wasn’t good enough. But we’ve got a good run of games coming up where we’ve got to keep our heads up and go again because I still believe in this team, everybody does. We do have quality, it’s hard to look through that after today but we’ll keep being confident.”
With the second youngest squad in the division, playing against the top teams is a learning opportunity for Vincent Kompany's young players.
“It is, it’s the best league in the world, we know that anyway and we’ve definitely found out this year, it’s been a tough season. But we’re not dead and buried, there’s a chance for us. There’s a good run of games coming up and there’s no better time to put it right than the next game that comes our way and hopefully we can pick up a run.
“It’s probably hard for people to look at that and think there can be any positives but for us, there are positives there, there’s confidence there still. Like I say we’ll reflect on this, not good enough, put it to bed and onto the next one.”
That next one is Crystal Palace who Burnley travel to next Saturday, what's Brownhill and the team's plan heading into that test?
“We’ve just got to review that game, the stuff that we can do better and work on that for this week. We’ve got a great chance to go away to Palace and put in a performance. But it’s the Premier League, you can’t expect any result in this division. They’re a good team, especially at home. They’ve got some really quality players so it’s not going to be easy at all.
“It’s one that we’re going to have to have a big week and go into that game and get our confidence back, that belief back and go on and put on a show.”
