Fine finishes from Kian McMahon-Brown and Dylan Morison earned Burnley U18s a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the third round stage of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday night.

There were two changes from the team that beat Stoke City in the U18 Premier League on Saturday, with Albert Blackie returning at right-back.

First-year scholar Morison started in central midfield alongside captain Troy Savage, with McMahon-Brown leading the line having recently returned from the FIFA U17 World Cup.

The young Clarets had the better of the early running, with Brandon Pouani and McMahon-Brown both fizzing efforts across the face of goal in the opening 10 minutes.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though, and Connor Edwards rushed off his line to produce a brave stop at the feet of Emilio Ballard-Matthews soon afterwards.

Burnley looked confident in attack with Pouani and fellow winger Luca Scanlon causing Wolves problems, and the sustained pressure eventually paid off with 34 on the clock.

Savage did excellently to win the ball and find McMahon-Brown in the inside right channel, and the striker checked onto his left foot to produce an unstoppable strike into the top left corner.

It was 2-0 in first-half stoppage time when George Brierley crossed into the box for the Morison, who hooked the ball into the roof of the net after his first effort was blocked.

Wolves returned from their dressing room with added oomph to their play, heading a corner narrowly wide at the back post before Sebastian Lochhead hit the woodwork on the hour.

Burnley continued to push forwards at every opportunity, though, and Wolves ‘keeper Josh lacey did well to deny Brierley twice before the 75th minute.

Tony Philliskirk’s only change of the night saw Pouani make way for James Lewis with five minutes of regular time remaining, with his scholars defending their advantage resolutely.

Despite Wolves’ best efforts it was the young Clarets who came closest to finding the game’s third goal, with Scanlon and Lewis both being denied in the dying embers of stoppage time.

The referee blew for full-time with 97 on the clock, allowing Burnley to celebrate progressing to the fourth round of the competition.
