Late drama denied Burnley U18s a point against Manchester United on Tuesday afternoon as the Red Devils made it 2-1 with virtually the last kick of the game.

United’s two goals were scored by Louie Bradbury and came either side of Luca Scanlon’s close-range header on a bitterly cold day in Padiham.

Tony Philliskirk named a strong starting XI, with U21s regulars George Brierley, Kian McMahon-Brown, Brandon Pouani, and Albert Blackie all featuring from the off.

There was also a start for U16 centre-back Elijah Turahirwa, while Troy Savage wore the captain’s armband in the centre of midfield.

Goalkeeper Callum Feeney had to be at his best a couple of times to deny United striker Bradbury in the first 15 minutes.

After saving a powerful effort from the number nine at his near post, Feeney produced a double stop including a brave dive at his opponent’s feet.

The young Clarets gained more territory and control as the first half progressed and came closest to a goal of their own when McMahon-Brown took aim from the edge of the box.

United led at half-time, though, with Bradbury able to get across Turahirwa and convert on the slide in the 45th minute.

Feeney made another smart stop from Nathaniel-Junior Brown at full stretch shortly after the restart, before Philliskirk’s team had a strong 15-minute spell.

In there was an effort blocked behind from Fabio So, before McMahon-Brown fired straight at the ‘keeper and Savage wasn’t too far off target from 20 yards.

Our first change saw Anwar Murtesa replace Turahirwa around the hour mark and the equaliser came with 79 on the clock.

Pouani beat his man on the left and stood up a perfect cross for former United winger Scanlon, who stooped low to head between Frederick Heath’s legs.

That added extra reassurance into Burnley’s game and Brierley almost found the bottom left corner but for Heath’s intervention, before our final change saw Pouani make way for James Lewis.

The sucker punch came in the 93rd minute as 15-year-old JJ Gabriel burst forward down the left and crossed for Bradbury to finish hard and low first time.
