Burnley U18s’ latest pre-season friendly saw them contest a well-fought battle with Wrexham U18s on Saturday afternoon.

It finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, with both teams creating chances but neither quite able to apply the finishing touch at Burnley Training Centre.

Manager Tony Philliskirk selected a side mostly consisting of first-year scholars, with many of his second years either away with the first team at Stoke City or featuring for the U21s on Friday afternoon.

The young Clarets’ first chance of note saw Warren Taylor head narrowly wide at the back post, before goalkeeper Connor Edwards was forced into a fine tip over the bar.

Centre-back Anwar Murtesa later headed a presentable chance wide, and Edwards made a smart stop low to his left as half-time came around with the match all-square.

Wrexham missed a golden opportunity to take the lead straight after the restart, with number 11 sending a penalty over the bar.

Philliskirk’s first change saw striker Destiny Okonkwo replace James Lewis and U16 Terry Leonard was later introduced for valuable minutes.

The visitors were unlucky not to nick a winner late on when they hit the post twice in 30 seconds, and there was nothing to split the two teams at the final whistle.
