Burnley U18s drew 2-2 with Polish top division side Warta Poznan in sweltering conditions on Wednesday morning.
Troy Savage and Benji Wetshi were on target in what was the age group’s first of two pre-season friendlies during their week-long training camp.
Manager Tony Philliskirk named a youthful starting XI, with all but two of those selected being first-year scholars.
Burnley started brightly and Savage broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. After good work down the left, striker Adam Abbas pulled the ball back for the Northern Ireland youth international to pick out the bottom left corner.
The rest of the first half saw the Clarets compete well against their older opponents and create chances, with George Brierley and Adam Abbas both firing narrowly wide.
There was one change at the break, with Ben Jordison replacing Jack McEvilly at centre-back.
Our opponents changed their entire 11 and their fresh legs paid off, scoring twice in the space of nine minutes to edge in front.
Second years Wetshi, Zach Johnson and Logan Carlin were introduced with 20 minutes to play and the substitutions breathed life into the team.
After a flurry of chances striker Wetshi eventually restored parity two minutes from time, showing tenacity to force the ball from home from close range.
The U18s are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lech Poznan Academy’s training base to take on the eight-time Polish champions’ youth team.
