Tony Philliskirk’s youth team were beaten 1-0 in a close U18 Professional Development League encounter away against Coventry City, with the only goal of the game coming in the 86th minute.
A Trialist, who came off the bench, was the goalscorer for the Sky Blues in a tight game which saw neither side really create many chances, but both enjoy spells of pressure.
Boss Philliskirk made nine changes from the side that narrowly lost out to West Ham United in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round earlier this week, opting for a younger squad for the trip to the midlands.
Amongst the changes was Lewis Forshaw, who came into the side for his first appearance of the season to replace Charlie Casper, named on the first-team bench away at Ipswich Town later in the day.
First Half
The Young Clarets flew out of the blocks and were almost in front within the opening two minutes of the game when forward Rohan Vaughan did well to hold off his man before crossing low to Trevon Bryan.
The winger attacked the ball and forced Coventry ‘keeper Charlie Callaghan into a smart save.
Then, after a sustained spell of possession for Burnley, it was Coventry who would see the next big opportunity fall their way. Good work on the left from Evan Eghosa resulted in forward Aidan Dausch finding space, but he placed his effort just wide of the post.
Burnley full-back Oliver Sweeney and frontman Vaughan also both had chances to grab the opener, with Sweeney’s shot after a quick break away sliced wide and Vaughan’s strike fired over, Bryan the creator of both.
At the other end, Bradley Stretton played a clever one-two with Eghosa on the wing, and the former bent an effort just wide of the far post when he should have done better, with the sides heading in level come the interval.
Second Half
Ryan Tioffo was introduced by Philliskirk for the second 45 minutes, and almost helped the Young Clarets to an opener moments after the restart when a quick breakaway resulted in him playing in Vaughan, though the striker could only hammer over on the angle.
Soon after, Coventry managed to carve their way through the backline before Forshaw rushed out to smother Eghosa’s shot, and the rebound was put wide.
The Sky Blues substitute trialist had a huge chance to open the scoring, but his header back across goal looped narrowly over, while minutes before the end of the game, Tioffo saw red for his second caution of the game.
It didn’t take long for the hosts to make their man advantage count, a cross into the area not dealt with and the trialist poked an effort at goal which was deflected in past a helpless Forshaw.
The U18s are back in action two weeks from today – 11th February – when they host Peterborough United in Professional Development League action at the Burnley Training Centre (11am KO).
