Burnley’s U18’s side were beaten 4-0 when they faced Colchester United in Professional Development League action at Malton Stadium.
Colchester took the lead through Freddie Price after 10 minutes and went into the break with that advantage, before Ewan Gordon-Clement added a second nine minutes into the second half.
Substitute Makhaya James netted the third before Trialist B made sure of the hosts three points ten minutes from time.
Tony Philliskirk made four changes from the side that bowed out to Accrington Stanley in the LFA Youth Cup, with Noah Adekoya, Jack McEvilly, Ryan Tioffo and Vernon Masara all came into the side in place of Frankie Deane, Wiktor Gromek, Rohan Vaughan and Kian Le Fondre.
There were places on the bench for U16’s Logan Carlin and Adam McCoy.
First Half
The Young Clarets created the first half chance of the game after four minutes, as Callum West delivered an in-swinging corner that just evaded the head of an onrushing Gabriel Otegbayo at the back post.
The hosts, however, were the team to take the lead, as good work on the right from Samson Uwandu resulted in a cross through bodies to the back post, where Price was on hand to tap into the almost empty net.
Colchester almost made it two nine minutes later, as Uwandu found himself in space on the edge of the area and shot just wide.
The Clarets – who were forced into an early change as Ryan Tioffo limped off – withstood a number of U’s crosses to keep the scoreline at 1-0, as they went into the break behind.
Second Half
Philliskirk’s side almost found themselves level just after the restart, as Masara used his speed to break in behind the Colchester backline, before Jayden Peglar raced off his line to smother at the Burnley forward’s feet.
And shortly after the hosts added their second after Gordon-Clement latched onto a ball forward and just got there ahead of Jon Ander Vilar Robinson to poke the ball home.
Joe Ashton had the Clarets biggest chance of the game on 63 minutes, rising highest to meet a free kick, but he was only able to flick his header wide of the target.
Colchester added a fourth 11 minutes from time as substitute Trialist B found himself through on goal and slotted under Vilar Robinson to all but seal the three points for the U’s.
Vilar Robinson did well to deny Trialist B the second time around, positioning himself well to block the hosts’ forward’s shot, in what proved to be the last action of the game.
The Young Clarets are back in Professional Development League action this Wednesday – 19th April - when they travel to Middlewood Road Training Ground to face Sheffield Wednesday (12pm KO).
