Burnley’s U18s team fell to defeat in their final away game of the season against Cardiff City in the Professional Development League, with the hosts winning 2-0.
The hosts took an early lead from the spot through Trey George before the forward added his second on 40 minutes.
Wiktor Gromek was then sent off in the second half as the Clarets failed to find a way back into the game.
Tony Philliskirk made four changes to the side that were victorious against Ipswich Town last Saturday – 22nd April – as Jon Ander Vilar Robinson, Ollie Sweeney, Jack Bates and Frankie Deane all came in from the start in place of Lewis Forshaw, Logan Carlin, Noah Adekoya and Callum West respectively.
First Half
The hosts started the quicker of the two sides and were rewarded for their strong beginning to the game, when Gabriel Otebayo brought down Trey George, who picked himself up and slotted in a penalty on 6 minutes.
It was almost two, minutes later, as Cody Twose made space for himself in the area but could only find the feet of returning stopper Vilar Robinson as the Bluebirds strong start to the game continued.
More chances were to follow for the home side, as firstly winger Japhet Matondo drilled a shot wide after cutting inside the Burnley defence, before defender Morgan Lewis the headed over from a corner.
And as the Young Clarets struggled to gain a foothold in the game, goalscorer George managed to find a way in behind the defence, with only a good block from Bates denying him, before Dylan Lawlor – up from the back – headed over the resulting corner.
The Bluebirds would add their second of the game 40 minutes in, as George did well to drive in from the byline before slotting the ball underneath Burnley ‘keeper Vilar Robinson to complete his first half brace.
In a very much Cardiff-dominated first half, Lawlor was close to adding a third just before the break, as he rose highest to head a Luey Giles corner towards goal and only the acrobatic reactions of Vilar Robinson, to tip the ball onto the upright, denied him.
Second Half
The Clarets had their first real chance of the game early in the second half, after Gromek found space 25 yards out, before sending a curling strike goalwards which was well held by Lewys Benjamin.
George continued to establish his influence on the game as once again he managed to work his way to the byline before cutting the ball back to Matondo who turned the ball just wide of the near post.
As the minutes for Burnley to get back into the game continued to tick away, Gromek saw two yellow cards in 9 minutes and was therefore dismissed, seeing them down to 10 men.
The Clarets had two late chances, firstly through substitute Ryan Tioffo who headed a cross onto the roof of the net before Lucas Wane forced a low save out of Cardiff stopper Benjamin.
In what proved to be the last chance of the game, Vilar Robinson did well to deny George netting his hat trick by tipping the ball round the post as the Young Clarets fell to defeat.
The U18s are in action for the last time this season next Friday – 5th May – when they welcome Birmingham City to the Burnley Training Centre in the Professional Development League (1pm KO).
