Tony Philliskirk’s youth team were beaten 4-3 by table toppers Barnsley at the Burnley Training Centre in U18 Professional Development League action.
On a day which saw the Young Clarets reduced to nine men after the surprise dismissals of Nathan James & goalkeeper Harry Moss, the visitors also ended the game with less than their starting quota after substitute Leo Farrell was also shown a straight red card by referee Ryan Aldred.
Centre back James had earlier extended Burnley’s lead to 3-1, after a brace from U16 Vernon Masara, but Barnsley – bolstered by those dismissals for the Young Clarets – completed a late comeback.
Masara was one of five changes to Philliskirk’s side from the midweek friendly draw against Celtic. He came in to the starting 11 alongside Moss, Frankie Deane, Callum West & Rohan Vaughan. Jon Ander Vilar Robinson and Ollie Sweeney both dropped to the bench.
Amongst the visitors lineup meanwhile was former Clarets academy midfielder Vimal Yoganathan.
First Half
Starting strong, it was Barnsley who had the first chance of the contest 10 minutes in, and it fell the way of Yoganathan who took aim from range but saw Moss get down well to parry clear.
Defender James then had to block away Tykes captain Josiah Dyer’s goalward shot from inside the area before the same man was denied by Moss.
But after Brad Grant had gone close with a shot at the other end, the visitors eventually took the lead on 32 minutes via an own goal from James who mistimed a clearance.
Only four minutes later though, Burnley were back level via Masara who hammered home Grant’s low cross from the left at the back post.
And on 39 minutes, once Emmaisa Nzondo had spurned a gilt-edged chance for the Reds, Masara put Philliskirk’s side ahead with a carbon copy goal, finishing another low cross from Grant to send the Young Clarets in ahead at the interval.
Second Half
An action packed second half began slowly, with only half chances for Barnsley going over & then wide from Mylan Benjamin and Alex Anaman respectively.
Eventually, on 63 minutes, Burnley got a third as Thailand youth international James rose highest in front of Barnsley goalkeeper Carter-Rodgers to guide home Deane’s free-kick delivery at point-blank range.
But less than two minutes later and James was shown red from referee Aldred for an adjudged foul inside the box, both a penalty and a sending off given. Tykes substitute Theo Chapman dispatched from 12 yards to halve the deficit.
The next action of note saw Barnsley’s own Farrell – introduced from the bench only a few minutes prior – dismissed for a stamp on Moss before on 79 minutes Benjamin levelled things up from close range, benefitting from a deflected clearance.
And soon after, the visitors had completed their comeback via the same goalscorer who curled home having found space.
Burnley pushed to find a late leveller, but one wasn’t to come, and when Moss’ control from a backpass just outside his box bounced up to strike his hand unintentionally, Aldred decided to send the ‘keeper off, with the game ending in 9 v 10.
Philliskirk’s side next return to action on Saturday, 26th November, at Sheffield United in a 12pm KO (GMT).
