Tony Philliskirk’s youth team earned their first three points of the U18 Professional Development League season with a 2-1 win against Charlton Athletic at the Burnley Training Centre.
Captain Joe Westley was the matchwinner, striking a brace as the young Clarets came from behind to register the win having fallen behind early on to Patrick Casey’s opener.
Philliskirk made one change from a 2-1 defeat at Reading last time out as midfielder Frankie Deane came into the side in place of Ryan Tioffo. Forward Tioffo dropped to the bench, with Oli Sweeney missing out on the squad.
First Half
Starting fast, striker Westley had a shot held by Addicks goalkeeper Henry Molyneux within 15 seconds of the game kicking off.
Chibke Okechukwu then drilled a shot wide at the other end, before Casey handed the visitors a lead with a composed finish on the 10-minute mark.
Two minutes later, Clarets shot stopper Charlie Casper denied Casey a second in quick succession using his feet, and soon after, Burnley would find a leveller.
When Molyneux brought Vernon Masara down inside the area, referee Luis Griffiths pointed to the spot, and although Westley had his effort saved from 12 yards out, he tapped home the rebound to make it 1-1 with 20 minutes on the clock.
With Burnley on the front foot, Wiktor Gromek sent a shot whistling inches over the bar at the end of a free-flowing move upfield, while Masara also hit an effort over and Deane’s low-driven strike was deflected off target.
Casper was called into action again to hold onto Henry Rylah’s attempt, before the young Clarets were awarded a second spot kick of the afternoon in time added on. Masara was again brought down, this time by defender Oliver Hobden, but Westley saw Molyneux dive the right way to stop his effort for a second time.
Second Half
Masara came close to nudging Burnley in front within two minutes of the restart, guiding an effort narrowly over, before Westley did just that in clinical style just before the hour-mark.
Doubling his tally for the afternoon, the striker took advantage of a slip at the back from Charlton to finish the chance one-on-one with Molyneux and hand his side the lead.
Philliskirk’s side retained their advantage from then onwards, dealing with what the visitors threw at them. Casper first held onto a dipping free-kick, before Casey then dragged a shot wide from inside the box.
Ryan Huke also headed over from close range, while deep into four minutes of time added on, substitute Micah Mbick glanced a header over the bar in space in the box.
That provided a let off for Burnley and proved Charlton’s final chance of the game, with the young Clarets hanging on to put their first points of the season on the board.
They now return to action in the Professional Development League Cup next Saturday – September 3 - , hosting Wigan Athletic at the Burnley Training Centre in an 11:00 kick-off. Next up in the league is a trip to Millwall in a fortnight’s time.
