Burnley’s youth team extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-1 draw against Sunderland on a glorious day at Gawthorpe.
Tremaine Eastmond opened the scoring early on for the young Clarets, with Tommy Watson levelling things up soon after the break to earn a point for the Black Cats.
Boss Tony Philliskirk missed the contest isolating following a positive COVID test, with one enforced change being made to his side from last weekend’s 1-0 win at Middlesbrough as George Walters replaced Joe Bauress, who was suspended.
Striker Joe Smyth-Ferguson also made his return from injury, named on the bench, and involved in a league matchday squad for the first time since October.
First Half
Coming into the game on the back of three consecutive victories, Burnley’s momentum continued, and the young Clarets were ahead after just four minutes through Tremaine Eastmond.
Last week’s goalscorer turned assister as Will Couch surged forward and squared across the box for Eastmond to sweep home with a cool finish.
Ahead early on, Burnley defended well and limited Sunderland to few chances, Sonny Singh firing wide on the half volley at the half-hour mark.
Eastmond then went close to his and the Clarets’ second of the afternoon, winning a footrace with his opposite number and reaching the ball inside the box before drilling his effort narrowly wide.
Soon after, midfielder Will Hugill brought a good save out of Black Cats’ goalkeeper Adam Richardson with a volley from the edge of the area having jumped highest to control the ball with his chest. It remained 1-0 at the interval though.
Second Half
Come the restart, Sunderland came out firing and levelled things up on 50 minutes with a carbon copy of the Burnley opener. Striker Watson finished well from a low driven ball into the box.
In what turned into a scrappy affair for much of the remainder, the visitors had the next chance and could’ve gone ahead with Caleb Parkinson drilling wide of Charlie Casper’s far post.
Trevon Bryan was introduced from the Clarets’ bench with 15 minutes remaining and tried his luck with a curling effort having took the ball high up the pitch, though Sunderland ‘keeper Richardson had it covered.
Smyth-Ferguson also came on, making his comeback from injury, as Burnley searched for a late winner, but one was not to come, and it ended with honours even at Gawthorpe.
