A boyhood Burnley fan, 17-year-old midfielder Will Hugill discusses the youth team’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Gawthorpe, their next opponents Leeds and his season so far…
Hugill on Sunderland draw…
“We’d had three wins on the bounce [going into the game], so it’s unlucky really [not to get the win]. We obviously wanted to get four in a row but to remain unbeaten is good.
"All of the lads are really disappointed, but I don’t think that you could fault anyone’s effort and application today because we all worked really hard.
"On another day, we could’ve got the win.”
Hugill on the unbeaten run…
“It’s a real achievement [to go four unbeaten]. As a team, we’ve looked to play a little bit more and today it was a little bit windy, a little bit of a scrappier game, so we had to find another way to play.
“It just wasn’t to be today but, on another day, we put the chances that we had away and go onto win the game.”
Hugill on Leeds United’s youth team…
“Leeds have been doing well this season. They’ve got a few good players and they’re good as a tea, but with the way that we’ve been playing recently, we’re going into it [the game] in good form and I’m really hoping for a positive result again.”
Hugill on his season so far and the closing stages of the campaign…
“Personally, I’m really happy with this season having experienced both U18s and U23s games.
“[In both camps], I’m hoping for a really solid end to the season. I want to end it good, win as many games as possible at both levels, climb the two leagues and just finish as high as possible.”
Hugill could feature for Michael Jackson’s U23 side up at Sunderland on Monday evening, March 21, in a 7:00pm kick-off at the Stadium of Light.
Meanwhile, following the international break, he will head to Leeds United with the youth team in a 1:00pm kick-off at the Thorp Arch training ground on Saturday 2nd April.
