Tony Philliskirk’s youth team lost out 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in U18 Northern Premier League action on Saturday afternoon (9th April).
Striker Dale Taylor scored the only goal of the contest late on at Gawthorpe, seeing FA Youth Cup finalists Forest take all three points.
Clarets boss Philliskirk made four changes to the side that suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Blackpool in midweek, missing out narrowly on a place in the final of the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup.
Benn Ward made his return from injury with Keelan Williams and Will Hugill welcomed back, while Ryan Tioffo also started up front having come on from the bench against the Tangerines.
Tosin Olopade, Brad Grant and Joe Smyth-Ferguson dropped to the bench at the training ground while Sean Etaluku missed out on the squad.
First Half
Warren Joyce’s side had the first opportunity of the game on nine minutes when Taylor broke through and tried to round Charlie Casper, though the Burnley goalkeeper came out on top.
At the other end, Joe Bauress tried his luck from distance and brought a reaction stop out of Forest’s Trialist before the contest became scrappy with both sides limited to very few opportunities.
Before the break though, Reds’ captain Jamie McDonnell missed a big chance in firing wide from point-blank range, while Ruairi Behan went close for the young Clarets but couldn’t direct his effort on target on the stretch inside the area.
Second Half
At the restart, the game continued in a scrappy manner with little action of note at either end until the final 20 minutes.
On 72 minutes, Kade Ratchford drove forward and picked out Tioffo with the striker seeing a shot deflected behind, and defender Nathan James also saw a headed effort bounce narrowly wide having met Bauress’ cross into the box.
Sam Collins then fired over the bar for Forest while Taylor also guided a shot wide, and it had looked as if the contest would end goalless after an even 90 minutes.
With the last kick of regulation time however, on 90 minutes, Taylor advanced to the edge of the area and struck a shot which trickled into the bottom corner to earn his side victory.
Philliskirk’s young Clarets return to action on Tuesday afternoon – 12th April – with the short trip to Blackburn Rovers’ Brockhall training ground in a 1pm kick-off. Coverage will be provided on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy.
