Burnley’s U18 side drew 1-1 against league leaders Barnsley in Professional Development League action at Oakwell Training Ground.
The Clarets took the lead through Callum West, who expertly curled an effort into the bottom corner.
Barnsley levelled 11 minutes from time after Rafael Monteiro drilled a low free kick past Charlie Casper as the points were shared.
Tony Philliskirk made four changes to the team that lost last Saturday – 25th February – at Crewe, with Charlie Casper returning to the side in place of Lewis Forshaw and Lucas Wane coming in for Ryan Tioffo.
Oliver Sweeney and Jack Rogers also started, replacing Frankie Deane and Jack McEvilly respectively. U16 Logan Carlin retained his place at right-back.
First Half
The hosts started this one well as full-back Hayden Pickard laid the ball off to Monteiro who drilled low and forced returning stopper Casper into a smart low save.
After the Clarets were forced into an early change, with Dylan Sime replacing the injured Kian Le Fondre, Casper was made to work once more, denying Pickard’s attempted lob from close range.
Despite the early Barnsley chances, it was Burnley that took the lead through a moment of individual brilliance from West, who picked the ball up in the area before curling a fantastic effort past a helpless Trent Carter-Rogers.
The Young Clarets were almost two up, as Joe Ashton was first to a free kick and denied by Carter-Rogers, before Nathan James hammered the rebound into the side-netting from close range.
The Tykes came back at Burnley following the opener, as Casper was on superb form to keep Philliskirk’s side in front, saving from point-blank range to stop Charlie Hickingbottom equalising.
And it was Casper yet again who stopped what looked like a certain Josiah Dyer goal, as he sprawled across his line to deny the forward following a cut-back from Barnsley winger Monteiro.
The Clarets ‘keeper tipped a Pickard free kick round the post, in his fourth crucial save of the half as Burnley went into the break in front.
Second Half
The second half was much slower than the first, with little to report in the way of chances, as Barnsley came forward, but the Young Clarets defended well to send them back with every attack.
A couple of half chances fell for the hosts with 20 minutes to go, with the bright winger Monteiro slicing a shot wide, before substitute Josh McKay’s cross towards the far post bounced onto the top of the net.
Despite the Clarets resilience, the Tykes would find their leveller through Monteiro, as he drilled a low free kick from just outside the area through the arms of Casper and into the back of the net.
Substitute Rohan Vaughan went through with seconds remaining in the game but could only fire over as the game came to an end and Burnley picked up a good point away from home in the Professional Development League.
The U18’s are back in action next Saturday – 11th March – when they welcome Birmingham City to the Burnley Training Centre in what will be their first home league fixture in almost three weeks.
