Tony Philliskirk and the youth team return to action after the international break with the visit of Leeds United in the U18 Northern Premier League.
After what was a challenging summer with broken pre-season schedules due to COVID-19, Burnley have made a good start to their second season at this level earning four points from three games.
A thumping 8-3 victory away at Newcastle United was followed up with a draw at home to Middlesbrough, though the Clarets did lose out to Sunderland in their last outing.
Philliskirk’s side sit third in the league table as a result, and they will look to strengthen that position this weekend when Leeds are the opponents, a side who Burnley enjoyed success against in the last campaign on two occasions.
Striker Sam Unwin, who scored the winner for the U23s on Tuesday against Rochdale, scored a hat-trick to secure the young Clarets’ first home victory of the season in a 3-2 win while Burnley also ran out 3-0 winners away against United back in March.
Couch’s second half strike seals three points in North East for young Clarets
That the biggest winning margin on the road for Philliskirk’s side last season, Michael Mellon – now with Michael Jackson’s U23’s side - netted a brace after Dylan Moonan had grabbed the opening goal of the contest late in the first half.
This season - like Burnley – Leeds also enjoyed an opening day win, coming out on top against Everton, though they have fallen to two consecutive defeats since to make it one victory and three points from three games.
Losses to Nottingham Forest and most recently Manchester United see Scott Gardner’s team sit in 12th place of the U18 Northern Premier League with that tally, such is the tight nature of the competition in its’ early stages.
With a 1:00PM kick off, the Clarets continue their 2021/22 campaign at the training ground on Saturday.
