Michael Jackson’s young Clarets will be hoping to kick-start their Premier League 2 season with a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor tonight (KO 7pm).
Injury-time goals from Michael Mellon and Sam Unwin gave Burnley a comeback win over Rochdale at Gawthorpe in the Central League Cup on Tuesday.
Ne-Jai Tucker got Burnley’s first goal in a thrilling 3-2 win. Jackson’s side will be looking to replicate that form in Friday night’s league fixture as they seek to end a run of three straight defeats to start their Division Two campaign.
Anthony Gomez-Mancini, Bobby Thomas and Lewis Richardson all featured for the first time in the behind-closed-doors win over Rochdale. All three have had spells training with the first-team squad and may be involved against Wolves.
Former Crewe Alexandra defender James Collins coaches tonight’s opposition.
Wolves have started the season well with home league wins over Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest. They also beat West Ham United 1-0 in the Premier League Cup last Friday. Singapore-born Harry Birtwistle scored the only goal in that win at the Aggborough Stadium.
Wolves defenders Christian Marques and Nigel Lonwijk went out on loan last month to Belenenses and Fortuna Sittard respectively. Canadian international forward Theo Corbeanu is also at Sheffield Wednesday on loan.
Collins is expected to field a young side, with some of the club’s first and second-year scholars having stepped up from the under-18s in recent weeks.
It was goalless in the corresponding fixture at Gawthorpe last season. Wolves won a five-goal thriller at Kidderminster on the opening day of the 2020/21 campaign.
Max Thompson and Richardson scored for the Clarets. Austin Samuels, now on loan at Aberdeen, got the winner for the West Midlands side.
Season-ticket holders can take in tonight’s action for free by showing their season card at the gate, with general admission prices for other supporters £4 adults and £2 concessions with tickets available to buy from the ticket office up to Friday evening.
