In the first of an academy double-header of friendlies against an XI from Cornell University in America, Burnley’s U18s were beaten 5-1 by the Ivy League outfit.
A youthful Clarets side was on show with numerous players from younger ager groups up against a much more experienced Cornell side. The U21s also take on the same squad from the university outfit on Thursday (6th April) with the older members of the youth team expected to take part in that game.
Things started brightly for Tony Philliskirk’s U18s as Ryan Tioffo opened the scoring early on, but the New York-based educational institute hit back with a hat-trick from Henry Hylbert. Wilson Frisner and Dakota Jonke then both netted to round off a convincing win for the visitors.
First Half
Tioffo found the net early on, piling pressure on Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Friedberg and closing him down successfully. Taking the ball off the shot stopper, the frontman powered home into an empty net to give Burnley the lead in the opening stages.
Cornell’s response was a quick one though, and just minutes later they were level as Hylbert grabbed his first of the afternoon, connecting with an inviting cross into the area to head home past Lewis Forshaw in the Clarets goal.
Dylan Sime then closed down the visitors well to win the ball high up the pitch and found himself one-on-one with Friedberg, though his shot went over the bar.
Lucas Wane also had the final chance of the opening 45 minutes as he latched onto a through ball, this time Friedberg got a hand to his effort to guide it over the bar and the teams headed in level at the break.
Second Half
Making six changes at the break, all of which planned, Philliskirk was able to give game time to players from younger age groups at the club, some of whom will be linking up with the youth team on a more permanent basis next season.
Gabriel Otegbayo, Jack McEvilly, Jack Rogers, Callum West, Lucas Wane & Ryan Tioffo all exited the action. On in their places came Albert Blackie, Noah Adekoya, Frankie McMahon-Brown, Anwar Murtesa, Vernon Masara & Rohan Vaughan.
With a bigger age-gap now on show, Cornell were able to stamp their authority on the game in the second 45 minutes.
Going ahead through Hylbert, their second of the game came via some neat skill from Will Carnevale – who had picked the pocket of Clarets defender Jack Bates - with a backheel to set up the forward to net his brace.
U16 McMahon-Brown made a great block to deny Patricio Parra soon after, and ‘keeper Forshaw was brought into action with a string of saves to keep Cornell at bay.
Hylbert eventually made it a hat-trick though as Matthew Hutchinson found a way through the Burnley backline and picked out Carnevale down the right who crossed a fizzing ball into the area for Hylbert to poke home.
Before the fourth came, Forshaw pulled off another superb stop to deny Hylbert, but the striker caused problems elsewhere and was involved in Cornell’s fourth as he found Frisner with an inch-perfect through ball to slot home into the bottom right corner.
And rounding off proceedings, the Americans made it 5-1 late on as they pressed high and won the ball with Jonke driving a rasping strike into the far corner of the net.
Burnley’s youth team are next back in action this coming Saturday – 8th April – as Coventry City visit the Burnley Training Centre in the U18 Professional Development league (1pm KO).
