Nathan Tella was all smiles following the Clarets fourth round FA Cup replay win over Ipswich Town on Tuesday evening.
Topping his goal scoring tally to 11 in all competitions, he spoke favourably about his opponents after the game and commented on the show of strength and character his teammates displayed to secure the victory on the night.
“[Ipswich] were really really tough to play against. For a team who are in league one they’ve got so many habits of championship teams and arguably they’re better than some of the teams we’ve played against this season. Credit to them they made it really difficult for us and I feel they’ll do really well in the league for the rest of the season."
Tella opened the scoring just 46 seconds in, however the home side weren't in front for long with George Hirst equalising on two minutes.
“We’ve always said we’ve got the character to get the goals to get back into the game and even when they scored and we were a little bit under the cosh we still didn’t give up, we still knew what we had to do. We stuck to our game plan and ultimately we were able to win the game.
The winner came in the 93rd minute, with Burnley through to the fifth round in which they will host Fleetwood Town.
“It’s credit to the team. Anyone could have come on and been the one to score the winner. Thankfully I’ve got that relationship with Barnsey where I knew he was going to get the flick on and it was just me anticipating the chance. Not looking up. Just having an instinct where the goal was and luckily putting it in the back of the net.
“It’s another opportunity for us to play in front of our fans and go on a bit of a cup run! There’s no reason why we can't go on and progress into the latter rounds in the competition, keep going and doing well - as well as focussing on the league.”
Next up for the Clarets is a north west derby against Preston North End.
“I’m feeling good but as a team we just want to approach every game the same. Whether it’s Preston or whether it’s an FA Cup game we want to approach it and train and work out what we need to do, what game plan we need to approach it and go from there.”
Finally, in the midst of the winning goal celebrations, the forward received some help from his teammates for cramp, however he added it was nothing to worry about.
“I’m fine! I think that was just my second ninety minutes since I’ve joined here and I think I probably cramped everywhere! Calves, hamstrings, quads, groin…but I felt it was a good performance anyway and the runs that, not just that I made but, the team made that it was inevitable that we were going to get the winner!”
