Charlie Taylor admits he’s loving life at left-back and is playing the football of his career after a whirlwind four years at Turf Moor.
The experienced defender joined from Leeds in 2017 and has become a consistent performer for Sean Dyche’s team in the Premier League.
He helped catapult the Clarets to that memorable seventh-place finish – and European football – in his first season and has started all but one of Burnley’s top-flight matches this campaign.
Dependable Taylor is relishing his role in Dyche’s squad and admits he’s eager to make the most of his ‘peak’ years at the highest level.
Ahead of Burnley’s trip to Wolves on Wednesday night, he said: “I’m 28 now and not getting any younger, so I’d say I’m in the middle of my peak years.
“I just want to enjoy my football, play week in week out in the Premier League, which is the best league in the world. I want it to stay like that.
“The [last four years] have flown by. Everyone says when you’re a kid that it’s a short career and you brush it off, but it really is.
“Time has flown by – I’m 28 now and want to make the most of my career.
“The position as a full-back has definitely changed over the last few years – it’s become the popular position to be.
“I enjoy playing it – it’s a position where you’re hugely involved in the game in terms of attacking and responsibilities defensively as well.
“A lot is asked of full-backs now and it’s a really good position to play in – one you’re always involved in.”
Burnley were enjoying a four-game unbeaten run in the league before Sunday’s clash against Tottenham was postponed because of heavy snow.
Spurs were still reeling from a midweek Europa Conference League defeat to Slovenian minnows NS Mura and Taylor added: “We felt it was a good time to play
them and we were desperate for the game to be on.
“We were disappointed the game wasn’t on, as it was a big one for us.
“We prepared as we would normally and expected it to be on – when we turned up for our pre-match meal at 11am, everything was clear and the next thing you know, you look out of the window, snow’s starting to settle and come down heavily.
“We’d have liked to have picked up a few more wins but we’re on a good run – and most importantly, we’re playing well. Even when we’ve lost sometimes, we’ve performed well.
“The positivity is good – it always is here and is something that the gaffer instils in us.”
Taylor has racked up over 100 appearances for the Clarets since 2017 but is still chasing his first goal for the club.
Fellow full-back Matthew Lowton netted in last month’s 3-1 win against Brentford and Taylor, regularly seen bombing forward down the left flank, admits he’d love to follow suit.
He said: “I think I need to contribute more to our goals.
“Either assists or even scoring myself. In four and a half years I’m yet to score, so it’s something I’m definitely trying to do and get involved in more.
“Performance-wise we’ve been good and there have been a lot of positives this season.
“Now it’s just about trying to turn draws into wins and really start to move up the table, hopefully.”
