Defender James Tarkowski gives his verdict on a point at West Ham United, sends his thoughts to Ashley Westwood, and praises his teammates for their fighting spirit
Tarkowski on the draw at the London Stadium:
“The missed penalty is disappointing, but we stuck right at it. We dealt with it [West Ham’s aerial threat] pretty well for most of the day but to concede like that hurts.
“I thought we came back into the game a bit more after that, we saw more of the ball and had a few more chances but just didn’t have that decisive moment.
“It’s not a bad point and it may prove vital come the end of the season.”
Tarkowski on West Ham:
“They are a good side with a lot of good players, and you can see the strength of their bench as well.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy day, we were hoping that they’d have lost a bit of energy after such a good night for them on Thursday [qualifying for the UEFA Europa League semi-finals].
“It [the point] is something for us to build on. It’s been a strange week of course for us, but we’ve got to stick together and move forward now. We have another two big games coming up this week.”
Tarkowski on another goal for Wout Weghorst:
"It's been coming for him, he's been working very hard.
“He puts the effort in and deserves a few more to be honest so hopefully that’s the start of something over these coming weeks.”
Tarkowski on Ashley Westwood’s injury:
“I have to give a special mention to Westy. You never want to see anything like that happen, especially to one of your mates.
“Hopefully it’s not as serious as it first looked, and we can get him back out there as soon as possible, but I’m sure it’s going to be a long while yet.
Tarkowski on two huge saves from Nick Pope in the closing stages:
“I went up to him just before their goal and said ‘it’s your time now’ because I knew that they’d get chances. They were countering on us and leaving people forward to try and find that space.
“We’ve seen it from the big man [Pope] so many times before, it’s not even a surprise to me anymore!”
