Burnley FC in the Community recently hosted more than 120 children at their Show Racism the Red Card Event, with Thea Paul, Lola Ogunbote and John Francis making special guest appearances.
Children from Brunshaw Primary School, Gisburn Road Primary School, and Holy Trinity RC Primary School visited Turf Moor for anti-racism and hate crime workshops.
In the morning, popular former player John Francis shared anecdotes from his time playing for the Clarets and encouraged the children to envision a future that champions equality.
Later in the day, Women’s first team captain Thea Paul and Head of Women’s Football Lola Ogunbote inspired the children to explore how they can effect change within their communities.
The group were also joined by former footballer Ken Monkou, who is now an Ambassador for the Professional Footballers’ Association and Show Racism the Red Card.
To make the day that extra bit special, the schools were given a tour of the stadium.
Following the event, one of the young people in attendance said:
“The people at the event educated us about racism and its effects and it was excellent being shown around the stadium.
“We were also able to learn about racism and talk about it to our friends and family, so thank you to all the staff for their time and effort.”
Thea Paul spoke positively of the day too, adding: “It was good to see the kids really engaged in the topic, and they were able to be creative while learning at the same time.
“Racism is unfortunately something that they may be exposed to later in their life, so I think learning about the topic at an early age is important and helps to set a good example of how they should treat people too.”
