Jeremy Sarmiento picked a perfect time to net his first Burnley goal, as he grabbed an important equaliser in Burnley's eventual 2-1 win over Portsmouth at Turf Moor.
Talking of the win and his impact he said: “I'm very, very happy. I was waiting for my moment this game, so eager to come on and just prove a point in a way. It’s so surreal to come on and on my first touch I can do something like that, so it was incredible.”
Head Coach Scott Parker introduced Sarmiento in the 61st minute and it took just two minutes for the Ecuadorian to pull the scores level with his curled effort. How did it feel to get an equaliser to ensure it was all to play for?
“We’ve spoken about this as a group and the Gaffer’s said we’re going to need everyone on the pitch to help, even if it’s in the last minutes coming on as a sub, or a starter. I think the group is getting better and better every week. Everyone’s just ready to give their all every single game and in today’s game we’ve shown that. All the subs that came on did amazingly, Browny as well with the last winner was sick! What else can you ask for; we gave it our all and we got the job done today.”
How would Sarmiento rate the team's reaction to going behind in the first half, did he always feel that the squad could secure the comeback?
“100%, I feel like the first half we started a bit slow. Second half we came out on top, had more control of the ball, we attacked more. We just felt more comfortable, we knew that we were going to have our chances, and it was just a matter of putting them away.”
The winger joined the Clarets in the summer and says he has settled into the Club well.
“It’s been good, the boys have been class, the coaching staff, the Gaffer, they’ve made me feel welcome, at home really. I haven’t really had a week’s full training yet, today was my first one, so I’ve really prepped for this game. The previous two games have only been a day before the game. So, this week was really important for me, I’ve tried to do my best and I did what I could do today.”
And finally, after a positive day at Turf Moor, how much will the emotion of a late winner help team togetherness?
“For sure, we’ve got to stick together until the end. We’ve got to go through the lows and the highs together as a whole team. We have an amazing group; we want to keep this momentum and keep building on it. This is just the start, it’s not how you start, it’s how you end as well.
“I’m sure of it, we have a brilliant group, we’ve just got to keep going.”
