Homegrown Claret Jay Rodriguez discusses his 100th career league goal in Tuesday night’s draw with Manchester United, a newfound partnership with Wout Weghorst and looking ahead to Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool.
Rodriguez on netting the 100th career league goal:
"It was a great touch from Wout. You can see how well he holds the ball up when you play it into his feet, and he had great awareness to play it into me. I took it in front of Harry [Maguire] to make him make a decision as to whether he fouled me or not. It’s a natural thing for me to do that one-on-one and I’m pleased with it.
[Getting to 100 goals] has been doing my head in to be honest. I’ve been dying to get it, but I’ve always got belief in myself and in how I work. I’m honest and I keep working on what I need to improve. I’ve had tough times earlier in my career and I knew that if I kept doing the work, I’d get there.
Rodriguez on falling behind against the Red Devils:
"We felt that we were still in the game but just needed to up it with a bit of quality and a belief to play.
We did that and we caused them problems. To come out in the second half with that performance gives us belief and confidence moving onto our next game."
Rodriguez on his partnership with January signing Wout Weghorst:
"We have a great group of lads here and with all of the strikers, everyone wants everyone to do well.
It’s good that he [Wout] has come in and fitted straight in. We can see the qualities that he has to link-up play and we’ll carry on to keep improving and get that win that we want."
Rodriguez on Wout’s strike towards the end of the game:
"It was [a fantastic save from David De Gea]. He’s world class and pulls those saves out week in, week out.
For Wout to strike it like that, everyone thought that it was in. That showed his quality again."
Rodriguez on securing a successful result at home to Manchester United:
"We’ve had some great results there over the years. Tonight, we were unlucky not to go ahead with Wout’s chance, but we’ve got to take the positives. It’s onto recovery now and getting ready for a big game on Sunday."
Rodriguez on Liverpool’s visit to Turf Moor this Sunday:
"We’ve got to believe. We’re in the Premier League and it’s 11 men against 11. We’ve shown tonight that we can mix it and play football as well. Hopefully we can just carry on."
