The Clarets return home with a point from East London in a battling performance, as Tomas Soucek cancelled out Wout Weghorst's first-half opener in an entertaining encounter.
First half
U23s manager Mike Jackson, who is interim charge of the side, introduced both Dwight McNeil and Jack Cork, the duo taking the place of Josh Brownhill and Aaron Lennon, who were both named on the bench at the London Stadium.
Meanwhile, West Ham brought n Lukasz Fabianski and Nikola Vlasic, with the pair not starting last Thursday’s Europa League quarter final win at Lyon.
Burnley started the game well against the Hammers and showed some positive passages of play in the final third, but the home side made the important blocks before the shots could reach Fabianski.
England international Nick Pope made a tremendous save to deny Jarrod Bowen from just inside the penalty area, getting a strong hand to push away for a corner kick.
West Ham’s momentum began to grow, and James Tarkowski made a crucial block on the line to stop Aaron Cresswell from scoring the game’s opener.
Burnley created a brilliant goal scoring opportunity in the 20th minute, when Maxwel Cornet found space on the left, but his cross failed to reach the target.
The Clarets were dealt a blow a couple of minutes later when Ashley Westwood went down after a collision with Vlasic, resulting in his withdrawal and Josh Brownhill coming on in his place.
After a lengthy break in play, Burnley took the lead when a dangerous corner from Cornet was met by Jay Rodriguez, and his header crashed against the bar, but Weghorst was on hand to tower above the Hammers defence to head home for his second of the season.
Burnley were playing with real confidence, looking dangerous every time they moved the ball inside the West Ham half, but the hosts were also creating opportunities, Ben Johnson and top goal scorer Michail Antonio missing the target.
The Clarets had a great chance to double their lead when Cornet was brought down after a foul by Fabianski. The Ivory Coast international stepped up but dragged his penalty wide of the mark.
The first half came to a close with Burnley leading by one goal to nil.
Second half
The first opportunity in the second half fell to Cornet, as he found space 25-yards from goal but dragged his shot wide of the post.
At the other end of the pitch, Antonio found space to direct a header straight into the palms of Pope.
On the hour mark, Burnley made their second change of the game as Connor Roberts came on in place of Matt Lowton.
A free flowing Burnley attack, starting from Pope in the Burnley goal resulted in the Clarets moving the ball to Cornet, who was free on the left hand side, to cut the ball back to Rodriguez but his side footed shot was wide of the post.
Said Benrahma came on for the Hammers in the 64th minute, replacing Vlasic.
The Hammers grabbed an equaliser in the 73rd minute as Soucek got his chest to a free-kick from the right hand side, setting up a tense finale at London Stadium.
Burnley nearly retook the lead when a dangerous corner was swung in again by Cornet, and Tarkowski nearly tapped the ball home, but it was cleared to Cornet to drag his shot wide.
Both teams made a change in the 78th minute as Pablo Fornals came on for Lanzini and Matej Vydra came on for McNeil.
