Clarets fall to defeat in Lancashire derby at Leyland County Ground
Tony Phillikirk's side suffered a derby-day 2-1 defeat in their Northern Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers.
Striker Joe McGlynn gave the Clarets the lead from the spot in the first-half, before second-half strike from Jarde Harlock and Evan Cunningham gave the visitors all three points.
It was a lively start between the two sides, as both teams looked to settle into the tasty clash.
The first real chance of the game saw Rovers forward Brandon Lonsdale strike the ball into the side netting from close range, following Lewis Thomas’ save from Zak Gilsenan’s low cross.
Shortly after, the Clarets had a handful of chances to break the deadlock.
The first saw McGlynn break through one-on-one with Aidan Dowling in the Blackburn goal, but his effort was eventually blocked
Before the pacy Sam Unwin then latched onto a great pass, before rounding Dowling, only to narrowly run the ball out of play.
However, after an evenly matched opening half an hour and numerous dangerous attacks from both sides, the hosts were awarded a penalty.
As McGlynn, who was causing chaos up-front for Rovers’ two cente-back’s, was brought down inside the box by George Pratt.
And the striker brushed himself down, before stepping up to slot home calmly from the spot in the 38th minute.
With Philliskirk’s side leading at the break, Rovers came out searching for an early equaliser in the second half.
And that’s just what they got, as captain Harlock fired in from close range to pull the scores level, with over half an hour left to play.
As both sides’ defences tightened up in the last 30 minutes, chances were not as frequent as the first half.
Young forward Michael Mellon was introduced with 15 minutes left, replacing Unwin, as the Clarets looked to snatch a late winner.
But it was Rovers who came close, as Lonsdale’s over-head kick sailed just wide of the post from a corner.
However, the visitors did then snatch a late winner with six minutes left, as Rovers substitute Evan Cunningham fired home.
And although Philliskirk’s side look to pull a goal back late on with a couple of attacks, the away side’s defence stood strong to keep the Clarets at bay.
