Burnley defeated Southampton 2-0 at Turf Moor on Thursday night (21st April) to earn three big points in the push for Premier League survival.
Both goals came in the first-half with Connor Roberts and Nathan Collins the men on target for the Clarets. Nick Pope also registered an eighth league clean sheet of the campaign.
U23s manager Mike Jackson, who is currently in charge of the side, made two changes from the starting eleven at West Ham United last Sunday.
Josh Brownhill replaced Ashley Westwood, who was stretchered off against the Hammers, in midfield while Connor Roberts also started as Matt Lowton dropped to the bench.
Young Irish striker Dara Costelloe was named amongst the Clarets substitutes at Turf Moor.
For the Saints, boss Ralph Hasenhüttl named an unchanged side from their weekend win at home to Arsenal. Ibrahima Diallo returned to the bench with defender Jack Stephens missing out on a place in the squad.
First-half
Southampton had the first sight of goal on seven minutes as Kyle Walker-Peters broke forward into the area and had an effort deflected behind for a corner.
Oriol Romeu also found space from the set piece to meet the ball, but saw his header go wide.
Five minutes later though, having applied pressure at the other end, a fine strike from Welshman Roberts put the Clarets in front.
After Dwight McNeil had a similar shot headed away, Josh Brownhill picked up the ball to feed Roberts who cut inside and curled into the far corner, netting his first goal for the club.
Striker Wout Weghorst also came close on two occasions soon after, denied both times by Saints ‘keeper Fraser Forster.
First a low strike was kept out by the England international before he scrambled to save after a melee in the box. Weghorst headed down McNeil’s cross for ex-Southampton man Jay Rodriguez to take aim, his shot was blocked and fell again to Weghorst.
The Dutch international volleyed back at goal with Forster having to scramble across his line to save once more.
On 25 minutes, Rodriguez’s stopping header from Brownhill’s corner was then clawed away by Forster with Republic of Ireland international Collins keeping the ball alive but Weghorst hit the woodwork with a follow-up header.
The visitors then missed a golden chance through Romeu again heading wide one of James Ward-Prowse’s corners, while McNeil brought another good save out of Forster from a low driven strike.
On 41 minutes, play paused for players to break their fast as the Clarets showed their support for those observing Ramadan, and four minutes later, as the board for added time went up, Collins headed home a second.
A VAR review for offside confirmed the goal as the defender met Brownhill’s corner and sent Burnley in two to the good at half time.
Second-half
The Clarets started the second half as they had ended the first, on top. Within 44 seconds of the restart, James Tarkowski had met another Brownhill corner, but the captain headed over.
After a quiet period, Burnley had the ball in the net again on 63 minutes through Rodriguez, who bundled in a rebound with his upper body after Forster punched another Tarkowski header into his path.
Jack Cork was at the side of Rodriguez and eventually after a lengthy VAR review, he was adjudged to have been in an offside position which is why the goal wasn’t given.
Just two minutes later at the other end, Nick Pope was called into action, denying Che Adams at point-blank range with a reaction stop in the forward’s first involvement since coming off the bench.
Pope also tipped over a Ward-Prowse free-kick before Charlie Taylor made a goal-saving block to keep Adams out as the ball found its way to the Scotland international inside the box.
Seeing out the game well, Rodriguez then flashed a cross across goal from a quick free-kick, Collins inches away from connecting at the back post.
McNeil also curled just wide having cut in from the right wing while moments earlier, Burnley’s claims for a penalty were waved away as Ward-Prowse appeared to handle Tarkowski’s half volley. VAR again reviewed, though referee Stuart Attwell’s on-field decision was confirmed.
Five minutes of added time later, Attwell blew the full-time whistle with Burnley securing three precious points and a clean sheet with a 2-0 win.
