A battling 1-0 victory over Coventry City at Turf Moor on Saturday saw the Clarets extend their impressive Sky Bet Championship winning run to seven consecutive matches and maintain the unbeaten record at home this season.
Jordan Beyer's 82nd minute header and first goal in Clarets and Blue proved to be the difference between the sides and the win sees Vincent Kompany's move 16 points clear of the play-off places.
Manager Vincent Kompany made four changes from the side that beat AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup last weekend. Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Ashley Barnes, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all made way for Arijanet Muric, Jay Rodriguez, Jack Cork, and Ian Maatsen respectively.
First Half
It was a lively start at Turf Moor with an electric atmosphere building in the Lancashire rain and it was City who carved open the first opportunity.
Viktor Gyokeres broke down the right, before cutting back to skipper Jamie Allen on the edge of the area, but the midfielder’s effort was blocked well by Cork and cleared away from Roberts.
Manuel Benson then tried his luck from range for the Clarets, cutting in onto his dangerous left foot but his effort sailed well over the bar.
It was a quiet half from both sides in terms of chances, with no shots on target for either team in the first 45 minutes in an even encounter.
Kasey Palmer came closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors, after breaking through on goal and targeting the bottom corner, before an excellent sliding block from Maatsen diverted the forward’s close-range strike wide of the goal for a corner.
Second Half
Kompany turned to his bench at the break and introduced Gudmundsson for Cork at the interval, as the hosts searched for the opener.
But it was Coventry who had the first opportunity of the second half, as Gyokeres broke into the area and rounded Muric, before a defensive block saw the forward’s effort denied.
However, Burnley instantly responded to the early scare and went up the other end with Gudmundsson picking out Benson at the far post, only for the Belgian to fire over.
The hour mark saw Rodriguez and Benson make way for Barnes and Tella, with the latter coming so close to heading home the opening goal on 65 minutes, but his powerful effort was palmed away by Wilson.
The Clarets then got their opener as the final whistle approached, Beyer glanced home Gudmundsson's corner with eight minutes to go, before wheeling away in front of the Jimmy McIlroy stand.
